You can’t really read the poem without magnifying glasses because it’s so small, but it’s on the inside and inscribed beautifully. This is a decorative piece as far as I see and certainly not to be used as a true hiking compass but it does point north. I think the leather case would show wear immediately if it were used for practical purposes, but I love how it holds the piece and adds to the dramatic feel of it.also, The buckle is the real deal not a snap closing, already buckled strap.
