Initially she was able to use the lid similar to a coffee sipping cup. In the end, the child sippy cup lid made it possible for us to give her liquids when she was not really with it. The handles were great with her hands ravaged by rheumatoid arthritis. My only mistake was I bought just one. They are plastic so dropping had its toll. I bought two more after the first one started to show its wear and tear. These cups were a great choice and worked best.
