Getting long in the tooth, but still the best for plug n play media playback.
The best device for playing media files. Have a couple of these wdtv live boxes that are playing avi, mkv and mp4 movies from an external drive as well as using them with usb flash drives and without a doubt, its the best media player out there. Yes, its still buggy and slow requiring a reboot every now and then and the processor needs an upgrade, but it still gets the job done in playing files that makes other boxes seem castrated. The wdtv online content is pretty mediocre by modern standard. I just use it for netflix and the slingplayer app, but my main use is for playing content from a wd mybook external hard drive and they both work well together as the external drive goes into sleep mode when the wdtv live goes into standby. The fact that Western Digital removed netflix from the newer version of this box is baffling to say the least, thus my purchase of this re-certified model. Doesn't look like the new version brings all that much to the table anyway, except maybe miracast, but I have no use for that. So, how can a device that is now long in the tooth as far as features goes, along with an interface that can be slow still get 5 stars from me....It's all down to the fact that when it comes to media, it supports it all and plays it all well. That's why I bought it and that's what it excels at. I have three roku boxes and one amazon fire tv box and they all suck when it comes to plug n play media. It's just a shame that Western Digital haven't really moved the game forward as far as their own boxes. If online content is your thing, stay away from this box, but if you've got a collection of movies / tv on a NAS, external hard drive, or on a usb flash drive, this is the box to have.

Best Players in their Price Range
I have been a big fan of these machines, and have examples of several earlier models. Contrary to other posts, it supports every format I have thrown at it. The only reservations that kept me from giving it 5 stars are that the user interface is not as intuitive as earlier models (that did fewer things), but I suspect I will just need to get more familiar with it. Also, many of the more advanced LIVE features are slower to launch then I expected, and streaming content often needs to buffer for several seconds in order to play properly, but I am still quite pleased with it's performance.

Nice on paper, bad in operation
Extremely "buggy" and slow. User interface is nice, but maneuvering through it is like surfing the web on 56K speed. It's extremely slow and freezes up constantly forcing me to restart it numerous times while watching a a show for an hour. This may be representative of a reconditioned model, I cant say.

A great device.
A great device. I had looked at a number of these streaming devices including Apple TV and Amazon's gadget. I believe that this was a reconditioned unit. I had looked at the most current version in a local electronics store and was told that the later version did not support netflix. After confirming this on the internet I started doing some research and saw comments from many disappointed customers who had bought this to watch netflix, like me, only to find that for whatever reason, it didn't have netflix. I did a search and found the reconditioned device that I bought at amazon. It supported netflix and has the extra feature, which was what sold me on it, of being able to plug a memory stick into a USB slot to watch your movies in a wide variety of formats.Setup was easy. One HDMI cable and I use wifi to my home network and it is used exclusively for netflix and my movies. It did not come with a printed manual so I had to go online and upload a very complete and thorough PDF manual. It works fine, lasts a long time.

This is a good product but now and then you get one that has a problem-- do read on.
This is a tough one to review. I bought this exact same model, WD WiFi - TV Live streaming about a year ago purely for watching my movie collection off of a hard drive. It is perfect for that use. I don't use any of the other features. HOWEVER, I bought this additional unit to use in another area and it was bad out of the box. The WD logo was flipping down on the screen in a different language. I tried it on two working TV's and they both flipped ( ran down the screen ). I had to send it back as not working as described. I still want this model and will try again after I get my refund.By the way, it came with no paperwork, no user guide, just the box, remote, the aud/vid cord and power adaptor. All was packaged in a heat sealed baggie.I am afraid this was just a roll of the dice. There is always the chance you will get something that does not work and this was just one of those chances. The other unit I previously bought works flawlessly and I like it very much, hence why I gave this review three stars. I didn't want to give the impression that the product was bad as a whole, that is not true. I just received a bad one. It happens.

WD TV Stream Box with no Manual or support
I bought this machine in hopes to watch movies from my portable external hard drive. Unfortunately, it does not support AVI or Mk files. It doesn't even support MOV files from our family videos. It tells me to refer to manual for supported files. The problem is that there was no manual, or any paperwork with the package. Very disappointing after reading reviews here. Useless. Waste of my time. My smart TV can play Netflix, Youtube, Amazon prime and etc, which is not why I got this. If you want to play videos from your external hard drive, this is not your choice. Will return.

Works as Advertised
Works quite well/works mostly as advertised. I just wish it had a bit more processing power so the interface was more responsive and so it could support H265/HEVC and 2160p/4K video. I also wish it was capable of playing DTS-HD MA and Dolby TrueHD audio. In a passive way, it can play the DTS-HD tracks but it is only reading the DTS core - not the lossless HD track. Also, Western Digital has terrible post product launch support. Some of the worst in the tech industry. For example, the "new" (which is really not so new anymore) YouTube is not supported by the player. I highly double WD will ever release new firmware to support the update. Personally, I would gladly trash the WDTV if something better came along...
