Review: 'Let's Take a Drive'..(with plenty of 'Extras' in the boot). - Mullholland Drive (2 DISC edition - 2017'StudioCanal')... OK to start with I hadn't seen this in nearly 20 years (yes I know, but there's been a lot of films made in last hundred years..) I can't comment on previous DVD editions, Bluray releases etc..I can only state (as I remembered,it is an excellent film, but what put the film in my 'have to get' list?...Basically the 'New Restoration', good looking extras, & it's low price.. The Film(140 mins)on Disc1 has '5.1audio' & optional English subtitles, it's ratio is 1.85:1..& 'filmed on Fotokem'....it's worth mentioning the DVD does not have any 'chapters'( as some people may find this not to their liking)... To me the image quality is very good, the night time 'Hollywood lights' shimmer beautifully ,the detail & the films various 'Colour Codes' Is clear & the harsh look of some of the later 'real life scenes' do stand out.. The Cover line stating 'Brand New Restoration Approved by David Lynch' may not just be a bit of 'promo-nonsense'.. So to the Extras..The 2 most recent are a(13min) interview with Laura Harring ,who still looks & talks very much like an old 'studio system, classic Hollywood' beauty...& a very interesting (16min) section with regular editor(& co-producer) Mary Sweeney, where she gives Some good details regarding Lynchs working process & a bit about digital editing.. The (2015) interview with David Lynch & Naomi Watts(25mins) is also very worthwhile where amongst the usual 'gushing Hollytalk' there are some very honest statements from Ms Watts, particularly regarding her love scenes & her problems with 'the masturbation section'- as usual David Lynch is concise, polite & helpful. He explains in some detail the failure to get it 'on TV' as a pilot episode for a series & its subsequent journey to becoming a Film.. The rest of the Extras date from 2002 to 2010... The earliest feature(23mins) has scenes & interviews with various production & cast members 'On Set', & it appears they are already aware they're working on something that may be 'of lasting quality'.. .'Back to Mullholland Drive'(24 mins) is an interesting analysis (with various scenes from the film) that 'decodes' the story & what's 'dream & what is reality' & the 'Objective & Subjective' ...See if you agree with the Findings.. This & other sections originate from Alain Sarde/StudioCanal+( who helped finance the film) and are French productions (with English subtitles).. The 'Intro with Thierry Jousse' is a(10min) section with the former editor of 'Cahiers Du Cinema' magazine(it's safe to say the film made a big impression on a lot of people)...& as Lynch says the 'main story' isn't hard to follow & understand (but possibly not on a First Viewing) A(16min) section with the composer of the wonderful musical score Angelo Badalamenti ,who has a good 'cameo' in the film is enjoyable ...& the(27min) feature 'Into the Blue Box' features director Richard Kelly(donnie darko) & other mostly French directors, documentary makers, critics etc is another good extra.....& this still leaves a brief deleted scene ( as Mary Sweeney states the first 'Rough Cut' she assembled was around 5 hours, there is obviously much more footage & scenes somewhere...) Some brief 'promotional interviews' with Lynch & the 3 main characters- I haven't mentioned 'lead actor' Justin Theroux who does appear in various previously described sections.... & not forgetting the discs come with 6 postcard sized pictures... A great film ,a fine quality print, plenty of interesting extras, some nice piccies ,all at a good price..what more could you want?...(er..possibly a commentary & a trailer ?)....but even without these it's still a '5 stars' package for me...
Review: This is the version! - This is not a review of Lynch's masterpiece as enough has been said in praise of this extraordinary film: rather it is to compliment the newly re-mastered 2017 Blu-ray edition. I have the 2015 Blu-ray edition and the markedly superior Criterion Collection Blu-ray edition. This latest edition is, however, surpasses both the respective picture and sound quality of even the gorgeous Criterion edition. It is an absolute marvel and makes Mulholland Drive appear dramatically alive and almost like a completely new film despite my having watched it many times including twice at the cinema. There is a dynamic of both colour tonality and sheer detail that leaps-off the screen in even those darker scenes, and the depth of field projected is utterly sensational throughout and breathes new life in to such iconic scenes including: the prowling camera work inside Aunt Ruth's flat; 'that scene' at the Winkies bar, or the weird and enigmatic meeting with 'the Cowboy'.. I thank David Lynch and his associates not only for the genius of the film, but also the work in making viewing this masterpiece at-home an even greater experience in 2017. Bravo! In a nutshell: this particular Blu-ray edition is mandatory for any lover of this film and/or Lynch's extraordinary work.
