Worth every penny
As someone who is accustomed to do it yourself car repairs and domestic service manuals, I was completely impressed with the quality of this book.No fuzzy black and white photos. Full of detailed exploded view drawings and very detailed and deliberate instruction. It leaves very little to the imagination, but that is the point. In 6 weeks this book has saved me $600 in timing belt replacement labor and $200 in CV Joint boot replacement. So much information, start marking the pages early or you may find yourself thumbing through the 2k pages looking for that exact diagram you know you saw. This book is worth every penny.

Great reference book for any repair
I bought this manual because I ran up a curb like an imbecile and put a nice size hole in my oil pan. The manual has great diagrams and was invaluable in replacing the oil pan. I am not a grease monkey by any means but with this manual by my side I was able to complete the repair without incident. It would be useful for any repair seeing as it has thorough diagrams of nearly every part of the car. Do not buy this manual thinking you will be able to fix a blown head gasket or some other major mechanical malfunction using it as a reference book without any mechanical training. It is a service manual not an auto mechanic certification.Overall a great piece of literature.

Ever older Passat Needs this.
2002 gls wagon, bought used and had so many gremlins that I finally broke down and picked up the Bentley. Everyone on the forums reccomends these and after receiving them I fould out why. So much information that they are like an encyclopedia for the car. Was helpful in troubleshooting an ignition problem, motor mount,. snub mount, axles and brake system problem. Yes.....all they typical VW passat issues. WOuld reccomend if you plan on keeping the car for a while. Have a high re-sale value so you can always sell them if your car ever dies :)

Must Have for Passat DIYer
I've owned my Passat for just over four years now and after the last visit to my mechanic ran me just under $1,000 I decided I needed to learn to care for this car myself! This book is fantastic and is a must have for anyone wanting to do maintenance work on their own. It's simple to follow and is descriptive enough so that even if you have no idea when you get started, you feel confident after reading. Love this and will be putting it to great use as long as the car will run!

Very good manual. A little difficult to find the repair your looking for.
If you have a Passat in this year range you have to own this book. It is a valuable resource even if you are only trying to change a light bulb. That being said there is a sticking point that is a bit annoying. If you were trying to change a light bulb and knew exactly where it was on the car, it could probably take anywhere up to 10 minutes to find it in the book. In this age of instant access it, looking for long periods to find things can be a bit bothersome. Once you do find it the removal and replace procedures are pretty well laid out, most having illustrations to show you the step.Doing any major service will have you scanning all over the book due to pre and post steps that need to be found. All in all this is a must have for shade tree mechanics through to professional shops.Thank you for reading my review.

OK for me but more for a Pro I guess.
This book has a comprehensive list of tasks/jobs for most, if not all, of the automotive system. As a novice, it was too much for me but was a starting point. There are photos of the car systems in the beginning but mostly it is a schematic diagram of the parts and maybe a high level placement of the items. The layout was confusing as trying to remove and access to some parts just didn't seem to make sense and the manual didn't provide much insight either. The book refers to the code reader a lot. This code reader is VWs proprietary brand and it costs a lot so when the manual would refer to code reading you were stuckI resorted to online forums and YouTube a lot for successfully servicing my car. This book may be useful for a pro who has the proper high tech expensive VW scanning equipment but it was not as resourceful as I was hoping for. I have had my VW Passat for 12 yrs now and she has been good to me. While I let the mechanic do standard service, basic items like lights, brakes, air filter, etc. I attempt to do. The book again was ok but online was much better.

MUST HAVE....
For anyone with a Passat and the inclination to perform repairs. This manual is well organized, and has great exploded view illustrations. Even though it covers several models and years, each one is shown separately. You won't find yourself saying, "My car doesn't look like any of these pictures." There is far more information in here than any Chilton's or similar manual.

No Transmission Rebuild Specs or Diagrams
I ordered the set since the description listed the "Transmissions covered": 5-speed manual (transmission codes: 012, 01W) 5-speed automatic (transmission code: 01V) 6-speed manual (transmission code: 01E)The manual however does not cover the internals of the transmissions. It only has some basic specs and some simple external service procedures for changing the filters or adjusting the linkage. What a joke. Now I have to track down the rebuild drawings and specs somewhere else. The manuals are only slightly more helpful than the ones published by Haynes, not very.

A massive highly detailed two-volume manual. Wish I had bought one years ago.
This is a massive two-volume manual packed with information. The amount of detail is amazing, with diagrams or photos of every part of the car. It includes instructions on how to use the manual - which is necessary because the structure is quite complex. There is also a very interesting and helpful section describing the basic concepts of all the major elements of the car, such as how the turbo works, how the ECU works etc. There are many helpful descriptions to strip down parts of the car, including important information such as torque settings, etc. The editors notes are also invaluable, including recommendations not contained in the original VW manual. The exploded diagrams of the engine, gearbox, body, transmission, electrical systems, etc are fascinating. The manual is perfect when used alongside Google and YouTube. Whilst the manual provides definitive information (such as torque settings, and accurate diagrams, etc) the internet can back it up with helpful videos of the simpler tasks. My main requirement for this manual is to help with fault diagnosis and to talk intelligently with my garage. I don't have faith in any of the garages I have used to understand and diagnose problems in this technically sophisticated car, so this manual is vital. These manuals have already helped me fix several long-standing faults that the garages couldn't find - including a broken breather valve which 3 garages couldn't find after numerous visits, a failed brake switch, two open-circuit fuses which no garage could find, and poor radio reception caused by another garage messing around with the diagnostic software. And I have just replaced the air filter and air-con pollen filter with the aid of the manual. So it has more than paid for itself already! The quality of these manuals is excellent. They are hard-back and bound to a very high quality. The heavy gauge paper is high-quality with clear print using a good sized typeface. In fact the manual is far too good to use in the workshop. I photograph the pages I need each time and print them so I can keep the original clean. The photos are also useful when I go the spares department of my dealer to show them exactly what I need.If there is a negative, it is that the manual covers the entire range of Passats, meaning that it can be slightly challenging to make sure you are looking at the correct section - although the sections are actually very clearly labelled. Also you are paying for a lot of information which is not relevant to your car. But that's being very picky - I have no regrets buying this manual, in fact I wish I had bought it much sooner.

Can't go wrong!
If you own a VW Passat from 98 - 05, you can't go wrong with the Bentley two volume service manual set. Packed with info and procedures used by factory trained techs, this set is the epitome of all things Passat! I Have a Haynes service manual as well, but not near the wealth of info contained in these manuals!

Bentley service Manual caution
I always purchase a service manual for any vehicle that I own. Bentley manuals were the VW standard. I have one concern and would caution anyone purchasing a manual in the future to investigate the possibility of omissions. The 1st section of this manual, 'section A Maintenance ' is incomplete. The book opens beyond the index with pages Product Familiarization pages 17-24. The top of page 17 reads '3 Clutch and Transmission'. These were glossy coated pages. The following pages are labelled Maintenance they include pages A-63 thru A-92. The omission of pages A-1 thru A-62 drove me to hunt the internet at times. Perhaps I received a damaged book or a one off misprint? Other than these omissions, the book is informative and does what it is intended to do.
