My original 496257 liiks thin and flat compared to this. Is it supposed to fit as the original?

It fits, but oddly.  Instructions as follows:
1. Remove current fuel pump and hoses - retain and reuse the fuel tank and pulse hoses.
2. Cut the outlet hose on its pump end so that the total length from end to end is approx 7".
3. Connect the three hoses (looking at the pump, with the two outlets on the left - fuel hose on top and the pulse hose on the bottom).  Outlet hose to the carb is the single on your left.  Secure with clamps.
4. Install the pump with the two hoses to the left.  The screw holes will NOT line up.  I secured one screw at the top). Secure with hose clamps.
5. When the air cleaner base is reinstalled, tuck the fuel pump behind the base to prevent the outlet hose from interfering with the throttle lever.  Check connection and it should work quite well.

Does the pump have a specific orientation?  Top and bottom.  Can it be mounted in the horizontal instead of vertical?  It will not fit as the old

This is a response from Briggs and Stratton directly to this question.

"The older style fuel pump, 692026, was discontinued in 2010. That pump as well as the rebuild kit for it is no longer available. 
 Fuel pump, 799056, will feed the carburetor correctly. I understand there is a difference in style and size. This fuel pump will not fit in the same space as the original. You will need to follow the instructions provided with the new part number in order to mount this fuel pump to your engine. 
 For your convince I have attached a copy of the installation sheet.

Be sure to reconnect the three hoses to the proper tubes.  Wedge the new fuel pump behind the carburetor (if the holes do not match up) and the air filter cover should help secure this.

why is the shape of the original fuel pump and the replacement pump different?

It's due to the location  inaccessibility of the original pump and new pump redesign. It's a better performing pump.

Question 4

Could someone describe which pump hose fitting the gas supply line, the line to the carb, and the line to the crankcase go to?

Accepted Answer

As you hold the pump with 2 nipples facing downward and 1 nipple facing left, the one facing left goes to the carb. The one facing down that's closest to you goes to the vacuum/crankcase supply and the one facing down furthest away is your supply line coming in from the fuel tank.
