Been using this for a few months now. Used to use TMG but it gave me terrible breath. Unlike TMG this stuff tastes terrible but it actually improves breath and body odors instead of causing them. I'm surprised that I can take up to a tablespoon with no bad effects. I dissolve it in water, drink it down and chase it with clean water, swishing my mouth out several times to get rid of the acid. I'm pretty sure it has all the good health benefits of TMG with out the body odor. Thought about taking both since I have a ton of the other stuff left over. I've read that a tablespoon of this stuff in a glass of water is 10,000 times more acid than vinegar yet a glass of vinegar would make me sick while betaine HCL does not. Might take some getting used to. Start very low and increase. A also found out that it discourages my thirst and I have to force myself to drink more water or I get really dehydrated. Fixed all of my digestive problems and cured cold sores. At least I thought I was cured and stopped taking it. A month later got very sick. I feel great once again taking it. I think you also need extra calcium because your body uses calcium to buffer the HCL. Started taking Kal brand bone meal powder and I think the two supplements complement each other very well. If you don't mind having rotten garbage can breath go ahead and take TMG form of betaine. Otherwise suck it up and take this stuff. I've read the bad breath comes only after taking a teaspoon or more a day of TMG but once you got it it's hard to get rid of because you will feel so good from taking it. I can't recommend this stuff enough. It's cheap and it works!

I was taking 12-14 commercial HCL capsules with each meal. Because this was proving very expensive I bought it in bulk and filled some 00 capsules.A milligram scale (less than $10 on Amazon) assured me that these capsules were exactly the same weight as the commercial ones. However because the latter contain unwelcome fillers (Magnesium Stearate for one) the actual Betaine in each capsule is 650 mg. The homemade capsules contain 800 mg of Betaine.Thus one has to take fewer capsules with each meal - a lot fewer in my case. However, I would NEVER take the powder without encapsulating it. It is so acid that I have no doubt it would eventually do a number on your teeth - to say nothing of your throat and esophagus. The stomach is designed to protect itself.Pepsin: Most commercial HCl supplements add Pepsin, an enzyme that aids the digestion of protein. While pepsin is available on Amazon (Dr Clark) papain is often considered a more effective enzyme (See superfoodprofiles.com) with the added benefit of being freely available everywhere..And please stop complaining about the lack of a measuring spoon or related device. A decent milligram scale is less than $10 on Amazon.And, as a by the way, until about three months ago I was taking a boatload (24) of the commercial capsules with each meal until my son discovered that a zinc deficiency can cause the body to produce less HCL. I started taking zinc and within 24 hours had cut my HCL down to the afore mentioned 14 or so. This certainly wont help everyone, but it is always worth a shot.

I've been finding using Betaine HCL useful for some digestive problems I've been having. I was finding I needed higher dosages (3-6g) for some meals. This became expensive. The Betaine HCL supplements with filler seemed to be giving me some difficulties too. So I bought this product by bulk supplements and some large capsules, and started making it myself. And, well, it works just fine and cost is controlled. Only downside is the Betaine HCL crystals are some large and granular. I think a finer powdered form would be a bit better for packing into capsules, but no big deal. Cost savings and efficacy are what is important here.

So far I am getting good results. I just used three "00" capsules with an omelet breakfast and my stomach is calm. I also added a digestive enzyme. For those that want to capsulize this powder (this may be the best way to take it due to the taste and possible negative effects on tooth enamel), you can capsulize it without any special equipment. I typically use the Capsule Machine for convenience but found when using it that the "powder" is acutally granulated crystals and does not act like a typical ground-down powder. The crystals do not pack down, and the tamping tool does not compress it at all. This means that you can just fill the long end of a 00 capsule and it will be as full as it will get. Then just replace the cap, and it's done! I weighed out the finished capsule (after subtracting the weight of the capsule) and found they are 640 mg. I suggest placing a quantity of the crystals in a small bowl (like a cereal bowl) and use a gloved hand (think exam glove) to hold the capsule and dip into the powder. It's a tedious job but I think a youngster (if you can get them to help) cannot really mess it up. One person to scoop; one person to cap! Good luck!

Last time I ordered this HCl it was full of long white dog hairs. I thought it was a fluke. This time I opened the bag and noticed the HCl was not the white color it should be. It smells distinctly of brown sugar and appears to be mixed with brown sugar. Not eligible for exchange or return. Stay away fromThis company. My sister also had all sorts of weird stuff show up in her HCl. I’m finding a new place to order this stuff.

It works, for those who lack HCL or Stomach Acid. I drink it in a liquid and swallow immediately to avoid contact with teeth. I went from almost zero stomach acid with food rotting in my stomach for up to 2 days, to now being able to digest food without the putrid smell coming from my stomach. It takes time though, and the first day will feel very acidic for your stomach and throat, but the body gets used to it to the point where you won't be able to feel the acidity anymore, at all.
