GPS’s are a great tool to have, but like most toolboxes, you need variety.
The quality of the physical device regarding the Garmin Dezl 780 is absolutely outstanding. It is rugged, heavy and indestructible in feel when comparing to ANY of the Rand McNally units. It includes a rubber shell whereas Rand McNally does not.The screen is clear, bright, high in resolution, responsive and smooth. The magnetic mount has a good design and holds very tightly, but the weight of the unit does not help it to stay in position so I’ve learned to rest mine on the dash. The routing is right on par with Rand McNally, but no GPS that I’ve encountered ever suggests the literal perfect route, this is where using Google Maps or an Atlas really helps you (the professional driver) navigate efficiently and make smart course changes. The interface is slightly more complex then Rand McNally but once tinkered with for awhile, becomes no challenge. The coloring of the map is easier and more clear on the eyes.It has a multitude of changeable options or route stats that one might want to see. Time of arrival, drive time left, mile marker you’re closest too, savable routes, direction heading, altitude, etc.Other stuff such as an internet browser, WiFi updates, Bluetooth, voice commands (which I don’t use), customizable wallpapers, pre-programmed shops and rest stops and truck stops just as the other major truck driver models.I do recommend this device over any of the Rand McNallys even though I wish it weren’t the case. Rand McNally has a good interface and routing, but their devices are 3rd world basement branded units which die rather quickly for the cost of purchase.

GPS great, mount needs improvement
My other GPS is a Garmin so when I needed a commercial GPS I went with this one because it’s what I am familiar with. It works great for me and the large screen is a plus except...... The mount can’t handle the weight of the GPS so it’s always drops down with every bump in the road. Extremely poor design. I tried using silicone caulk on my mount but that was only a temporary fix since the silicone doesn’t stick to plastic. Finally decided on a permanent fix and glued it. No going back now. Garmin needed to test this on a bumpy road.

My thoughts on the Garmin 780
I love this GPS. It identifies weigh stations, R&R crossings, school zones, sharp curves, speed limit warnings and traffic w/bluetooth linked smartphone. I especially like its add a stop truck stop finding ability. I didn't like the voice recognition , I'm southern might had something to do with it. The gps 's route finding ability could be fine tuned. It beats my old one by a long shot with lifetime updates. But it's not perfect. I use Google maps to verify the the 780's performance. I would give a 85% overall. I do recommend this gps for truckers because google will take you down alleys and hair pin curves that weren't meant for spread axles. This is also a refurbished unit. There was No damage and came in plastic but a generic label box. Very well packaged! Very pleased with it one month in use.

Good, but not enough.
Its a good GPS, but has a lot issues. As a professional driver I need to drive as much as possible per day. I been driving as a solo driver for 4 months, and I’m still getting to know the roads. A GPS for truck drivers is a essential tool, and we can’t do any mistakes.I noticed that it’s missing all local and regional Truck Stops. Also, it’s missing several of the mayor truck stops and service areas.I will recommend for the company to update their maps as new truck stops are opening. Also, my GPS sent me to a small Dead End. That’s unacceptable as there will be drivers that will not be able to handle the stress and been able to get out from those situations.I called customer service to inform them about the issue, and they asked me for the information of the missing truck stops yo add them. I’m a truck driver, and I don’t have the time to notate every missing truck stop. I

Truck route not always correct.
Not worth the money and sending it back.Screen is awesome! Really big and bright and no problem looking at directions.Love the highway on and off ramp lane merging feature. The unit itself is pretty damn cool. Looks like my old galaxy tab 7inch. Feels robust and heavy duty.I like the unit BUT the software is lacking. You input your truck dimmensions and the garmin will still send you a different direction.Ex. Im on a know truck route road and garmin states that im on a restricted road. And keeps trying to divert me to another road which i know is a restricted road due to weight.Did a system update and same issue. Not worth spending all this money and not working correctly.Again the unit it self is really good and robust but the software needs A LOT of help.

Great Value and Features
I purchased this refurbished unit because it was 30 percent off the price of a brand new unit. Amazon gives a 90 day, no questions asked, return policy, and it comes with a 1 year manufacturers warranty. When the unit arrived I was very pleased with the condition. I could not tell that the unit was refurbished. I am using this unit in an RV, not a truck, but it really doesn’t matter. I love that I am able to reroute the trip with the click of a button, and pick my own roads if I desire. This unit is feature rich. It will even notify you of deer crossings!I’ve only used it on 1 trip so far (650 miles), but am very pleased. The size of the display is outstanding. In fact, I may put this in the car for long trips when I’m not using the RV.
