Black & Decker's great way of doing business!
Several years ago I purchased a new Black & Decker Space Maker coffee maker. After about 3 years of service I accidently dropped and broke the carafe. I called B&D to order a new carafe but, was told there was a recall on them. They sent me a box to return the damaged carafe back to them and said I would receive a new carafe free of charge. Since I liked the Space maker so much I went to several local garage sales and found a suitable carafe however, the Sneak-A-Cup feature didn't work with the replaced carafe. About 4 or 5 months later to I called again to report I had not receive the replacement. I was informed there was a delay in the making of the new carafes. Within a few months I received a check for the total purchase price of the whole coffee maker. I still kept the original product along with the temporary carafe I had bought at a garage sale, Then a couple months later I received a new replacement carafe. All was well until a few days ago we had a local storm and a power surge destroyed the electronics making my fine Space Maker junk. Because of the way they had taken care of the carafe problem as well as sending me the check for the original purchase price I immediately went out and purchased a new B&D Spacemaker. In other words, B&D went far beyond what I expected in service. Thanks B&D.

GREAT COFFEE- DIFFICULT INSTALLATION
First the positive. It is a very modern and good looking unit. It saves a lot of countertop space in my small kitchen. It makes a good cup of "joe" and keeps the rest hot. I am very happy with my purchase! Now the negative. The old white B and D under counter coffee maker I had for years used a separate mounting bracket that was attached to the bottom of the cabinet. Then you just snapped the coffee maker into to this bracket. This new model requires that you drill four mounting holes in the base of your cabinet, then run the mounting screws down into the top of the coffee maker. I couldn't do this in my case. I ended up making a mounting plate out of a sheet of plywood, screwed it to the top of the coffee maker, then attached the whole assembly to the bottom of my cabinet. It turned out fine but I suspect that this may be more hassle than a lot of people would want to go through. Some other reviewers said that filling the reservoir with water was awkward which it is. I prefer to fill the carafe then transfer the water to the reservoir.

Get Your Coffee Before the Pot is Full
I was pretty sneaky here... My mother purchased this exact model many years ago and had it installed. We have enjoyed it since, even after she moved to Heaven a few years ago and I took over the old homestead. There is nothing else like it. The water tray is on the side, easy to remove/fill/return. The coffee pot can be removed while running for a quick cup. The whole unit shuts off after two hours for us forgetful people and the timer means fresh coffee is waiting for me at a 5 a.m. wake up. So when this unit finally died after some 15 years, it was only natural to seek out an exact replacement. Even after all these years, the install holes were exactly the same so it took longer to remove the old one than to install the new.

Get yourself some sort of measuring container that allows you to easily draw the amount of water you want and then ...
After reading many reviews and mounting my own thermal SPACEMAKER I have found my experience to differ from what many others indicate they are experiencing. This is what I have found with this coffeemaker:The template is correct. If you follow the layout instructions correctly, drill your holes from the center of the template hole marks and dill perpendicular, rather than even at a slight angle to the cabinet base, your holes will align properly with the coffeemaker mounting holes. I, personally, found another problem though. I will describe it below:I have a flush based cabinet on the underside 'BUT' I also have a front frame around the cabinet opening. My frame is 3/4" thick and raises up 1/2" from the upper side of the cabinet base. When placing your template you have to take this 3/4" thick frame into consideration and move the template somewhere between 1/2" and 3/4" back from the front edge of the cabinet. If you simply line up the template with the front of your cabinet frame the drill holes will be right against the back of the frame. Lining up the template along the backside of the frame allows you more clearance to install your screws. Naturally, this will move the front of the coffeemaker back from the front edge a bit. I chose to only drop the template back 1/2" rather than to the back of the front frame and I had enough room to install my front mounting screws without issue. This coffeemaker may have an 8 cup capacity but it's obviously not a standard 8 ounce cup they are talking about. Eight standard 8 oz. cups equal 2 quarts. Pour 2 quarts of water into the water container and you will find it's way overfilled above the the "8" cup indicator on the front of the container. While speaking about the water container I will add this:Filling the container with water is a cumbersome task. Measuring lines are hard to view, etc. Get yourself some sort of measuring container that allows you to easily draw the amount of water you want and then pour it into the water well. Doing so will eliminate overfilling/under-filling and save you much aggravation.I have noted many claims that the coffee is not hot. I am finding it to be as hot as, if not hotter than, my counter top Black & Decker coffeemaker and I have no complaints about that pot. I am not expecting very hot coffee several hours after brewing. My counter top pot keeps coffee fairly warm for 2 hours. The SpaceMaker keeps my coffee medium warm at the 2 hour point. That's how I like my coffee so it's no problem for me. If the coffee is not warm enough some seconds in the microwave fixes that the same way it does with my counter top model. The SPACEMAKER also saves plenty of electricity too because warmer plate model coffeemakers have a much higher energy draw than you realize while they are on for that 2 hours.Contrary to what some people are saying, I am finding coffee pours from the carafe well. You learn to pour it a little differently than with a glass carafe but it pours dripless unless you try to pour it too fast. That's the same case with any glass carafe too. Actually, Black & Decker glass carafes are notorious for slopping and dripping while pouring and require much more patience that you'll need with the thermal carafe. If you're spilling coffee around with the thermal carafe 'you' are doing something wrong.I don't care for blue lights so I don't like the blue light that's always on while the unit is plugged in. It's not a bright blue light but it irks me simply because I just don't like blue indicator lights on anything. They just catch my eye too much. Besides, that blue light serves no real useful purpose. It doesn't even make the water tank measuring lines visible enough. I won't miss the blue light if it ever burns out.My SPACEMAKER brews coffee in a good rate of time. Faster than my counter top one does. If it was a 12 cup model I suspect times would be about the same.I've only had my SPACEMAKER for several days so I cannot make any claims regarding dependability or longevity at this time. Even with faults that I found I wish I could rate this pot at a 4 but I cannot. I give it 3 because my first SPACEMAKER had to be replaced before I could even use it. It only had 3 nut fasteners for the mounting screws. The fourth was just an empty hole with nothing for the mounting screw to anchor too. The B & D rep indicated that was a known issue created at one of the factories. They did rapidly replace the defective pot though.BLACK+DECKER SCM2000BD SpaceMaker Under The Cabinet 8-Cup Programmable Coffeemaker with Thermal Carafe, Stainless Steel/Black
