As one of these intrepid folk, you naturally want to collect as much of the yellow stuff as you can. But are you a gold digger… or a saboteur? The players are dwarves—either gold miners working their tunnels ever-deeper into the mountains in search of treasure, or saboteurs trying to put obstacles in the miners’ path. The members of each group should work together, but often they can only guess who their allies are! If the gold miners can make a path to the treasure, they are rewarded with nuggets of gold while the saboteurs leave empty-handed. If the gold miners fail, it is the saboteurs who reap the reward! But, the identity of each dwarf is not revealed until the gold is split up. After three rounds, the dwarf with the most nuggets wins! Set Contains: 110 Playing-cards; 1 Instruction booklet Review: A Favorite Game Even Among My Non-Gaming Friends - I purchased this game only to find it was the German version, and was not terribly pleased at first with that fact. I had played it in the past, but it had been so long that I didn't feel comfortable trying to remember the rules from scratch. Thankfully, with a little searching online and the abundant images in the rules, it was easy to get going again. The cards themselves have very little text, none of which is language-specific. The game plays in three rounds, each lasting between 5 and 15 minutes, assuming people are familiar with the rules. Each round, players have the opportunity to earn gold, and the player with the most gold after three rounds wins the game. Saboteur pits two teams against each other: the gold miners and the saboteurs. The most interesting mechanic in the game is that no one knows the alliance of any other person! All players place mine shaft cards next to tunnels that have already been placed. As the mine expands, players can break and repair each other's equipment to prevent each other from expanding the mine shaft. The gold miners are attempting to build a continuous tunnel from the entrance (where the game begins) to three reward cards at the end of the board. The entire game is played in a grid, so the amount of cards between the entrance and the gold is pre-determined. The reward cards are hidden (although can be examined with special cards). Only one of these cards actually contains gold; the rest are worthless. As the miners attempt to reach the gold, the saboteurs that are playing attempt to stop them. As I mentioned earlier, the no one is quite sure which team other players are on, which causes players to be cautious in achieving their goals. After all, you don't want to sit out for multiple rounds because someone broke your pick axe, believing you to be a saboteur. I've found this game to be incredibly fun to play at parties and especially around people who don't like a lot of more modern card games. Of course, you have to get people to agree in the first place to give it a try. The game is simple, fun, and rewards players who talk with each other. It also combines some elements that normally do not mix well: secrecy and teamwork. Because the gameplay is so simple, I found that even those who had never played anything beyond Monopoly were still more focused on strategy and figuring out which team other players were on than on actual rules; even the first time they played! I get sick of apples to apples and all those other nonsensical games but my friends and family aren't willing to sit down and learn an intensive strategy game, this was a great median. I don't speak German. Oops, bummer. No wonder it took so long to arrive. HA! My bad. So, I opened it anyway and the game cards don't have any words printed on them (other than "Saboteur"). No problem. I was able to download the instruction in English and printed them out and put them right into the game box. So to recap: The box and instructions are in German. The game cards have no print on them. I kept the German instructions for image reference.
