Great Product, Buggy Setup, and I'd Prefer Better Security Options.
I've been using this as my new travel router for a couple weeks now and I have been mostly pleased. It's small and 110/220 compatible. I really like being able to turn on/off the signal lights with a touch as computer/device lights can be very annoying in a small hotel room. I also appreciate being able to change the WPS button to a Wifi on/off button because I do not want WPS on a travel router when any random hotel staff person may have access to the room. This unit is more powerful and faster than most travel routers, and it comes at a much better price point.I have a couple annoying security issues with the device. First, when you are asked to change the default login ID/password you cannot "paste" in the new password (it must be typed manually). I use a password manager (everyone should), the inability to copy/paste a randomly generated password is extremely annoying and serves no real security purpose; it just annoys users. Second, the login password is limited to 16 characters. That's really not long enough when the router has remote login and access options (which thankfully can be disabled). Users really should be allowed to create 32 or even 64 character passwords because there's no limit on the number of times someone can try to login (this is the same kind of vulnerability that lead to those nude celeb photos being stolen from iCloud); it makes the ASUS remote access (aka "AiCloud") extremely insecure. Third, there really should be a firmware auto-update option. There have been lots of security issues discovered with many brands of routers (including ASUS), and who checks their router firmware for security updates regularly? This really should be taken care of in the background via a secure process (to prevent tampering/malicious updated). Many other router manufacturers offer this feature. There also seems to be a bug with the ASUS one-time router setup process. Many of the settings (i.e. new login ID/password, new wifi SSID/password, etc) don't seem to survive the first-time setup wizard. They change during the setup wizard, and then revert back to the factory defaults at the end of the setup process. These are security and software problems common across many ASUS routers I've used.I also wish the plug could be folded up or down to make the back-side flat when packing, but since it's marketed as a 'repeater' and not a 'travel router' I won't fault ASUS for that. It's just an opportunity to make this a more appealing product to multiple market segments.

it worked fine. The only downside is that you can only ...
Bought this as a way to entend the wifi signal in our house. Upstairs, in one corner of the house I'm running a Netgear R6200 Router. I've confirmed 72Mbps connection to it on the 2.4Ghz network, and 480Mbps on the 5Ghz (LG G3 using Network Signal Info app from KAIBITS). I initially set this up as a repeater, and it worked fine. The only downside is that you can only get half the network speed, and if you're already at 70% signal strength, it might be less than you expect. I then set it up as an AP. Speeds are better, on par with what I would expect from an 802.11N router. I was impressed with how far the signal travelled, as now I could pick it up almost 200 ft away in the backyard.Using this with Google Chromecast.I was having trouble connecting my Chromecast to the repeater and after going back and forth with ASUS, and doing some Google research on my own, I think I found the trick to make it work. The Chromecast would see the network, but I could never connect to it. Based on the research I did, and learning that some of the necessary network settings are no longer visible in the online interface (but should be enabled by default), the way I was able to connect it was like this: On the 2.4Ghz network, for signal, instead of 'Auto', select 'Legacy'. I think this works because the Chromecast radio broadcasts over 802.11B. After changing to legacy, I connected the Chromecast, confirmed it worked, then changed the signal back to 'Auto'. Speed tests confirmed that my signal was back to N levels, and the Chromecast continued to work flawlessly (no lagging or buffering during Netflix/Plex streaming.)

You better look out for other alternatives. Overheats easily and become unstable in just 10 minutes. (Updated - AGU/15)
Bought this because I though that the ASUS Repeater will be hassle free, and Linus from LinusTechtips.com mention it in his youtube channel as a good option... The final product was not what I spected. When you are shopping for a Wifi Extender (Repeater), you want the most closely experience to being connected directly to the Access point as posible. Speed, Range, Simplicity and Stability over time. The RP-N53 fails on the last one.Problems:1) Doesnt support passwords with "Spaces" in it. (Even with the Firmware Update 1.0.1.0t)2) Overheats in 10 minutes, and stays overheated, causing the RP-N53 to disconnect and reconect from the selected WIFI network every 10-15 minutes. (Awfull for gaming or uploading data).3) In 4-6 hours of use, the overheat problem goes berserk and fails to transmit any data. It remains conected but with limited access, and basicly it doesnt work anymore. Also you cant access the RP-N53 menu. (Needs 10 minutes of shutdown to cool down.)Dont get me wrong. This thing works.. but with too much hassle and complexity (I need to turn it ON/OFF many times each day for cooling down the Repeater). Cant get it to work for 1 hours without going into problems.Just isnt design for working 24/7 and that is one of the most important features of an AP or Repeater.Forget about Linustechtips, I recommend to you, look for other alternatives.1 Star `cause this thing is useless if cant stay conected 24/7. Sorry Asus, but its true.UPDATE - (May 2015)There is a NEW firmware update that helps a lot in the Stability problem. And make this product a lot more usable than before. Firmware version: "1.0.1.2q"It will continue to fall out of the selected network, and will overheat... but the time that takes to rejoin its a few seconds, and it will happend not that often. Good Job with the New Firmware.UPDATE - (Agu 2015)This unit 5GHZ band stop working, and the 2.4GHZ give up from time to time. After less than a year of usage, the unit its giving up. I already replace it because its not even usable anymore.Piece of Crap. Do not BUY. I spected more from ASUS, but this looks like a RUSH-OUT product with some serious design problems with the hardware.Rise the Rating from 1 star to 3.
