Shovel is all in all, a very good reproduction
Follows the German WW2 design fairly well, but the case stinks to hi heaven. I tried the vinegar; coffee; baking soda & fresh air tricks and it still stinks. I through out the case. The shovel is well made, and as was originals, the handle has no protection. I used the authentic Ballistol protection for the stock that was used by all German WW1 & 2 military groups. Even to this day, Ballistol is used by many shooters. The authentic shovel used a bakelite nut and this one is made of either pot metal or aluminum. Also the original blades did not fold flat against the handle & this one does. But, all in all, a very good reproduction.

Small enough to be easily portable, sturdy enough to actually work if you need it in a pinch
Kept in back of my vehicle for emergencies. 5 star rating because it is well constructed. Not a substitute for a full size shovel, but small enough to carry in your car and not get in the way. Quality of construction is far superior to cheap import shovels that break when you use them. Constructed like the original US WW2 foxhole shovels (thick steel screw collar and threads; no thin steel or plastic on this shovel) Feels solid and does not flex at hinge joint. Handle is hard-wood.Of course a long-handled traditional shovel is more user friendly, but it is not really practical to carry around a long-handle shovel in your car. This folding shovel is a nice compromise.
