Worked great until it didnt
We have 2 of the 16TB models and we have them configured in RAID10 for a total capacity of 8TB each. Setup was easy and it worked very well as a NAS for our backup images.Just this week, I got a warning on one of them that a drive is going bad and it had repaired some sectors on the disk. OK that happens. However, I could no longer access the share. The entire point of RAID10 is to be able to access the data if a drive goes down.OK...so I'll just call support. The description says 24/7 support. That is not true. Phone support is only for the first year (we are almost at year 2). There is chat and email. Chat is always offline, so we can only email support. After the initial email, it takes 12 hours for a response. We didnt even get an automated "we got the request." This would be very bad if this was a critical device on the network.Fortunately, we have 2 of these and only use them as backups. Plus we also backup to S3, so it's ok if it offline for a few days.Verdict: It's fine for non-critical storage but I wouldnt use it as a NAS for VMs or mission-critical functions.I'll update this review up or down depending on how well support does.**UPDATE**They did eventually send new drives and got it back working. It took about 2 weeks from the time it went offline. Now, (almost at end of year 3) we have another issue with the device being offline. All the troubleshooting steps they have sent do not work. As before, there is only email support and chat does not work, so there is minimum 12-24 hours before responses. On top of that, they only send one step at a time, not several things to try at once...or "If A doesnt work, then try B" kind of thing.A $1K device should not randomly go offline and should be better supported.Downgrading to 0 stars (if it were possible). I do not recommend this product at all, nor the company. I will be replacing the devices with something more reliable.

Great Value and works as advertised.
Good bargain at the price. Reading various reviews it seems Buffalo uses different 4TB drives. This probably is why they don't specify exactly what's inside. I took delivery of my 1400R March 21, 2018. It came with 4 x 4TB ST 4000DM005 Seagate Barracuda drives. This is a "standard" 7200 RPM desktop drive that should work well in a light to medium use NAS environment. As a precaution I've purchased an extra one. The 1400R is plugged into my 1000Mbps LAN along with Windows XP, 7, and 10 computers. Everything is set up DHCP and I've had no issues. Slightly Negative Comments: The 1400R came set up as RAID 5. That's okay, except I wanted RAID 1. That took some time (BTW, change the RAID level to what you want before using the 1400R to store data). Also it boots up slower than any of my Windows computers. And it is loud when it is booting up, 74db, as towards the end of the process the two fans are exercised at full RPM. Once it is all booted and happy they slow down considerably and the noise at idle drops below my capacity to accurately measure. I'll probably buy another one latter this year, as I've got it already about 33% full with a lifetime of pictures and videos. I'm nowhere near finished.

Disappointed in capacity
I purchased the 16TB NAS assuming I would have about 12TB in RAID-5. In fact, the 4 drives are 3693.9GB for a total of 14775.60GB/1024 = 14.43TB. I actually end up with 10.8TB in RAID 5

Quick and easy
Quick and easy to mount and operate. Works as you would expect. I wish it had more than 1 ethernet port, although its not a huge deal.
