I personally use the compounds on the rougher side. I use white on half and green on the other half of the rough side as I only sharpen small blades. I keep the smoother side compound free for final finishing/polishing of the blade. I generally sharpen kitchen knives. **Q: Which sides are pre-loaded with which compound?** A: The strop has two sides, one quite smooth and one slightly rougher. The smoother side will have the white extra fine cutting compound, only required for extreme sharpness. The other slightly rougher side will be preloaded with the green compound that is perfectly adequate for a very sharp edge. I have already mentioned somewhere, that I use half of the slightly rougher side with green compound and the other half with white compound. The smoother side I never load with any compound.
