Does the newer PFX80 show either subtitles or CC or both?** A: I have never used Closed Captioning, so I'm not exactly sure what to watch for, but I played with the controls and checked the Operating Instructions.In the Operating Instructions, under Language Setup, you see four choices: (1.) OSD (On-Screen Display): Switches the display on the Screen; (2.) Disc Menu (DVD VIDEO only): Switches the language for the disc's menu; (3.) Subtitle (DVD VIDEO only): Switches the subtitle language; and (4.) Audio (DVD VIDEO only): Switches the language of the sound track. Nothing is mentioned about Closed Captioning anywhere in the Operating Instructions.I played two DVDs, the first stated Captioning on the artwork. The first DVD, on the main menu under Languages, had Captioning, and when it was selected, Captioning was shown on the screen, including non-speech elements and background sounds such as "music playing" (I think this is what you are looking for.). The other DVD had no Captioning, but it did have an "English for the hearing-impaired" option under subtitles, and it showed English subtitles when selected, but no non-speech elements, dialog only. The PFX980, it seems, will let you choose from whatever options are on a DVD. I do not watch TV stations/channels/cable/etc. I only use the TV for DVDs, so I can't comment on what happens with any other input (Which may be what you wanted to know about.).
