Gary Cooper plays Alvin York, the real-life country lad and sharpshooter drafted to fight during World War I but blocked from killing by his pacifist sentiments. Howard Hawks makes a rousing, heroic film out of the tale, and Cooper gives one of his best performances (for which he won an Oscar). The 1941 feature seems as much a valentine to wartime America (and a not-so-subtle piece of propaganda) as anything, with Hawks capturing splendidly shot scenes of life in York's home state of Tennessee, which in turn provide a striking contrast to the battlefield. A key scene in the film, in which York is presented with an argument in favor of killing in war, is still thought provoking. Audio is in English. With Korean subtitles. Sergeant York, who came from a very poor area of rural Tennessee and, was drafted into the U.S. Army in World War I. Although at first a conscientious objector, he was persuaded to fight by his commanding officer. He was an excellent marksman and became a national hero after one-day's work when he captured more that 130 German soldiers and killed about 25 others in a fierce battle. After receiving the Medal of Honor, among other prestigious honors, he was offered an opportunity to make a considerable amount of money but refused because he thought it was wrong to make money from actions where he, of necessity, had killed enemy soldiers. Gary Cooper, with his usual understated acting, makes an exceptionally good Sergeant York. This film recounts a nice piece of American history and is apparently quite accurate. Although filmed in the late 1930's, the photography and sound are quite good. The disc is made in Korea.
