Johnstone's Woodcare Outdoor Yacht Varnish - Clear 250ml

Excellent product does the job very well really recommend this product

I have just built a raised bed using 4x2 and weed membrane and the wood will be subject to a lot of water so it needs to be totally waterproof or it will rot within 12 months but having used Johnstones previously I knew this stuff is up to the job.A previous raised bed that is now 4 years old and was built as described is still going strong thanks to this varnish.Worth noting that I varnish all the wood after cutting to length but before building the frame or water will get into the joints where the varnish cant get and will rot the frame frame from the inside out.Dries quickly and clear but does have quite a strong smell so its best painted on outdoors.Cheap and very good quality thick varnish that I know from experience lasts for years.

Great varnish but I hadn't realised how small the 250 ml tin was! I have had to reorder a much larger 750 ml tin!My fault! Just make sure it is big enough for the job you have in mind! 😉

Having read the previous reviews decided to go ahead & purchase. It arrived promptly & was very well wrapped & sealed. Only needed a small tin (250ml) to cover the wooden parts of 2 garden chairs & a small table of mainly cast iron. I previously bought a stain/protector from another well-known company which looked wonderful at first but after 3 months of a wet British summer was flaking & peeling & looked worse than ever. Decided that if the varnish was weatherproof for the oceans then it should withstand UK weather. I reapplied the remaining stain stuff to cover the damage & have now applied 2 coats of this varnish. I did do it outside under a canopy & did not find the smell overpowering. It was very simple to apply with the texture like runny golden syrup. It did feel nearly dry after only a few hours but the can advised 16-24 hrs before reapplying which I did. I am not so keen on the high gloss finish but that is just personal taste & I wanted something that would do the job, hopefully this will. For ease of use so far would recommend. DO WEAR GLOVES.

The ideal sized can of varnish that came extremely well packaged with a shrink wrap polythene over the whole can that ensured no leakage which was then double boxed with lots of packing to ensure it arrived very safely and securely. It gives a high gloss finish that was easy to achieve with a couple of coats of the varnish on bare wood with no priming necessary. I can highly recommend this varnish to anyone who has small DIY projects who are looking for a tough high quality finish with the minimum of effort.
