No assembly recquired - it arrives folded up, and you just have to unfold it.My first concern was that the areas the support attaches to is uneven in a few places, so it didn't lock fully in place no matter how hard I pushed.However, when I sat down on it, I heard and felt a click as the pressure leaned into the points of attachment - and the weight fully locked them in place.I'd still feel better about it if the supports were aligned more properly, but it is good to know that it locks further in place under the pressure of weight - rather than buckle under and fall apart.The wood has no protective coating, so I highly recommend getting a waterproof tarp to protect it from the weather.My only other concern was how skinny it was. When I set it up, however, I realized that if it were any wider, it wouldn't fit my balcony at all. It's perfectly sized for a porch or balcony, so the skinniness is beneficial. It's length makes up for it, so you still have plenty of seating and table space for multiple people.If you only intend to use this in wide open spaces, however, then you can definitely look into wider tables/benches if you'd prefer.Overall, it's sturdy, functional, and perfect for what I need it for.
