This is where you will need to hold and lift the lid. The old traditional can openers open the cans from the inside of the lip which forces the need of a utensil to lift the lid from the inside. I gave the item 3 stars for sturdiness because I do not believe that the plastic handle will last. It didn't cut the paper either, which I usually have with every other opener I've used. Other than being messier since it cuts the side below the rim, I like it. It seems a lot less dangerous because there isn't the sharp edge you get with others. **Q: How does it work for left-handed people? I saw in one review that it turns clock-wise, which seems decidedly anti-lefty.** A: It is not truly ambidextrous. As the other person answering commented, if you use this left handed you will be turning the handle towards you while if right handed you turn it away from you. But since unlike most can openers which are held clamped by the left hand and cranked by the right hand (making them extremely difficult for lefties to operate) this can opener is self clamping - you hold the can and crank with either hand - so it is at least lefty usable. But, due to your arm NOT having symmetrical musculature, it is always easier to turn a handle AWAY than it is to turn toward yourself. That is why can openers and MANY OTHER devices crank in the direction they do, for the benefit of the majority right handed population. **Q: what is the warranty information and durability of opener?** A: It seems pretty durable. I liked the idea of no sharp edges. I am happy to say that this opener exceeded my expectations. So much easier than any manual can opener I have ever used! We are loving it and will be telling people we know about the ease of use and the safer edges of the lid and can. Turning the handle does not hurt my hand, nor does holding the opener to the can. Lifting the cut off lid is not difficult either.
