This lock engages by allowing the bolt to slide into the keyed mechanism to lock, and it uses a B1 keyway, ILCO (1098M). This chain door lock allows a door to open slightly for safe viewing and ventilation. Installation of this lock placed out of children’s reach will help prevent them from opening a door themselves to enter or exit into dangerous areas. All installation fasteners are included, and it can be used on a variety of door types, on or beside the door casing. Review: Good product, easy installation - Good quality and gets the job done. I added this as an extra layer of protection and it works well. It was easy to install. Review: Child proofing the front entryway. - I bought this mainly as child-proofing in response to my 2 year old's knack for unlocking deadbolts and opening doors. My wife and I wanted something to bar the door without one of us needing to get to the door to let the other in each time one of us leaves. This chain lock was exactly what we needed. This thing is sturdy, solid metal and heavy. For a chain lock I feel this is as good as they come. Installation was 5 minutes, most difficult part was drilling holes into the metal sheathing on the door. The keyhole is located at the top of the lock and works by inserting your hand through the space in the door, (About 3-4 inch gap), and inserting the small padlock key. This is a bit tricky, as the lock is right up next to the wall. Once unlocked, gravity does the rest with the heavy chain dropping out the bottom of the lock to rest against the inside of the door. This comes with 2 padlock keys, and while I haven't had too much issue the cut does not appear to be a perfect fit. I have to work the key a second or two longer than I should to get it into the lock. Still, no real issues here, but would prefer a smoother cut key than this. I'm not sure I'd be able to make copies of these that would work in the lock.
