Seriously, we love this coffee maker, but it's been back to the shop twice in the last two months. First a problem with the electronics, and next needing a new heating element. Krups uses independent repair shops that can take more than four weeks to repair the unit once they receive it. The last time, I complained bitterly to the very nice (but unhelpful) Krups Customer Service rep, but she said that "rules are rules--period!" She must have flagged my case somehow, as the turnaround on the repair was less than one week. It's presently working fine, and makes great coffee. On the assumption that we'd have to resort to Keurig K-Cups for a month, we bought a Bonavita BV1800TH 8-Cup Coffee Maker with Thermal Carafe that's absolutely super (although somewhat pricey and doesn't have an electronic timer feature). We prefer the Krups as we use at least ten cups every morning, but the Bonavita has a slight edge on brew quality, and a big edge on its hotter temperature!We've solved the water gauge defect by having a plastic container calibrated with a marks-a-lot mark to the proper volume, and ignoring the gauge indications! **Q: What color is it? It looks black and a light gold?** A: It's black and stainless steel. **Q: Will cone style paper filters fit the plastic filter basket? Is the filter basket like the original that came with the new FMF 5?** A: The filter basket uses #4 "Melita"-type cones. This is my second Krups coffee maker. The 1st I had for 7 years. It finally sprung a leak and thus it had to go. This one is a little louder, but it's also faster and has the pretty chrome front (the old one was all black,) so I guess it all works out.I read quite a few of the reviews (good and bad) before deciding to purchase it again. I'm really glad I did.Here's my take on a few points made in the other reviews:1.) The beep is too loud? Really? C'mon.2.) The coffee tastes like plastic. I forgot that. It did take a few weeks to break in. But this time I already had a broken in grounds unit and an old carafe, so it was perfect 1st time!3.) The unit spilled coffee all over the counter. That did happen to me. A couple of times. Twice in one week as I recall, and I did think to myself 'what am I doing wrong?' In the end though I made easily 2500 - 3000 pots of coffee with this unit and I lost maybe 7, 8? Not entirely sure. I'm willing to accept a user error on that.4.) The glass had a bubble in it. Yes that happened to me too. 3 things you should know about that: it comes out (so you can fix that pretty easily,) I never used the bubble to figure out how much water to put in (I fill the pot with the amount of liquid I want and pour that in) and there's a big red collar in the resevoir that has printed on it "10 T MAX." I think that covers that.5.) The resevoir is hard to fill. I took me a week to figure this out, but it's really not rocket science. Pull the unit out to the edge of the counter, turn it sideways, open the resevoir and fill.Bottom line is we drink a lot of coffee, and this unit made it all for us. I got 7 years out of it, and I'm pretty satisfied with that. So satisfied in fact that I bought another, but really it was a no brainer. It was less than $100, makes great coffee and I kept the carafe and the grounds unit from the old unit. So the machine was broken in from day 1 and I now have 2 carafes! ### ⭐⭐⭐ 3.0 out of 5 stars Krups FMF514 *by K***A on Reviewed in the United States on October 30, 2011* I got this coffee maker to replace my beloved, white, Krups 209 after 13 years. This is not my first replacement attempt; a few years ago, when I wanted to change my kitchen decor, I fell victim to the predecessor of the Cuisine Art DTC-975 BKN. (My review on that is still in here) Seeing the bad reviews for the Krups was as discouraging back then as it was now. But when my thermal carafe started leaking I knew Cuisine Art was not an option, especially since the newer model still seems to have the exact same flaws.This coffee machine looks nice and brews good coffee. The filter basket is easy to work. My carafe does not drip or spill; a huge plus. The opening is wide enough to allow for easy cleaning. Compared to others it is not too heavy, but less weight means less insulation. If you want your coffee to stay hot for longer than a few hours that might be an issue. Since mine never outlasts an hour I can`t tell. The lid that came with the machine did not seal as tightly as I wanted it to, but Krups sent me a replacement for no charge. Due to the shape of the carafe you have to turn it almost completely upside down to get all the coffee out. Because I use filtered water anyway the built in water filter to me is more a hassle than a plus. I`m afraid that all the complains you read about the water gauge are true. The air bubbles are easy enough to get out, but as soon as you slide the coffee maker around a little they are back. You may wonder why I would want to move the machine around: while brewing that thing makes enough steam to launch the space shuttle. Not moving it would certainly ruin my upper cabinets over time.So far I have used this coffee maker for 6 months, and I did not have any other problems. ### ⭐ 1.0 out of 5 stars DO NOT BUY!! I'd give it zero stars if I could! *by L***M on Reviewed in the United States on October 28, 2011* This FMF5 was to replace a two-year old FMF4 which brewed fine, but the door wouldn't hinge anymore and had to be held closed with a thick rubber band - effective but cheapened the look.After 4 months the electronc display went haywire (it didn't get wet and I had no leakage problem externally - perhaps internally and unseeable?) and none of the buttons would respond, so it couldn't brew. Krups sent a pre-paid mailing label and I shipped it off to BetterVac in Indiana who never responded to any correspondence or voice mails. It was returned in two weeks (great turn around time even if two of the buttons were badly scratched and dinged now) but after brewing one pot of coffee reverted back to the haywire display and unresponsive buttons.The numbers on the water level display are bigger on the FMF5 however air pockets still form and cause incorrect water level readings. If the display tube is flicked many times the bubbles can be disbursed, but why should you have to??? The pouring issue brought up in other reviews still applies and is annoying (after the first couple of cups you have to remove the lid and pour cautiously,) but can be lived with if it were the only drawback and design flaw.I've had Krups Coffee Makers for over 20 years, but the problems with these two units have made me decide to never buy another Krups product. They are obviously being made badly and cheaply now, manufacturing having been moved to China around 10 years ago, and I get the impression that Krups couldn't care less.I've emailed Krups and BetterVac and will update this review after further action (if any) is provided.Also, just want to say, I don't feel that this in any way reflects on Amazon.com, from where I buy tons of stuff every year and will continue to do so.
