The tool needs this battery internally on the computer board so it keeps the CMOS date current along with other needed items. Without the new battery, the scanner would show the wrong date in the memory and the scanner software wouldn't load for use. In my unit, changing the battery required opening the case, but since my unit is out of warranty, it wasn't an issue. After gently opening the body and carefully detaching the old battery from the computer board, I installed this new battery with its sticky pad to the board and closed it. Upon turning on the scanner, I reset the date and time in the Windows control panel and restarted the scanner a 2nd time. When the scanner was restarted and the WindowsXP system booted, the corrected and maintained date loaded in the CMOS. Now the software can be used again and the scanner works well!
