## Customer Reviews

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Very useful. Works perfectly (after a hiccup; Tip: AVOID old VGA cables).
*by W***K on January 23, 2020*

It comes with the switch box, two custom kvm cables, and some instructions (you can get the pdf version online too). Each KVM cable goes from the back of the switch to one of your computers: on that side it splits into 4 plugs: VGA, PS/2 mouse, PS/2 keyboard, USB.You plug in your mouse (USB or PS/2), your keyboard (USB or PS/2), and VGA monitor (with your own VGA cable) into the back of the switch. And that's pretty much it for installation. Power up the computers and go.I needed this as I was upgrading an old HP Pavilion computer to Windows 10-64 (from Windows 7-32 and Vista-32), but I still do much of my work on an old Windows XP Dell, so all these operating systems and two very different computers work fine on it. I use a Compaq USB mouse, but prefer an old Memorex PS/2 keyboard to anything newer, as well as an ASUS monitor. I can happily switch back and forth between the two computers using a 3-key sequence on my keyboard or hitting one of the two buttons on the kvm box, which is rather nice-looking compared to those messy cable-only KVM solutions. The LEDs on the box (inside the two transparent buttons) show which computer is focused, along with the on/off state of each computer. It's nice to see that ATEN (out of Taiwan) still supports this product, which is mostly for legacy equipment (PS/2 and VGA). There have been regular firmware updates with the last one in June 2019 (I bought this in December 2019) to address compatibility issues. I actually did not need it, as mine was already up-to-date (good to see). It's a little pricey ($50+) compared to other KVMs, like those cheap many-headed cable thingies that are USB-only, but theren't are many options with PS/2. I wanted something high-quality that was the most trouble-free over cost.NOTE: I did have a problem where randomly (say every few minutes) I would get blackouts of the screen (on either computer) for a few seconds, and on the HP the resolution would actually reset to the lowest one. I talked to ATEN customer service by email, and the tech/engineer was very prompt and responsive in helping me, but to no avail. I had the idea of switching out my VGA cable with a cheap spare I had, and voila the problem disappeared. As it happens, older VGA cables are missing pin 9 (just look) for compatibility reasons, but more recently that pin has been repurposed as an important (DDC) data link b/w the computer and monitor which the KVM needs (though neither of my computers needed it before). So it ended up being a problem on my end. Everything fine and smooth since. I am pretty happy with it.Video quality: I do think on my old Dell, for some small text, it was a little sharper before hooking it up to the KVM, though it still looks fine. It's understandable as you're adding a lot of stuff into the VGA path to your monitor. I tried replacing that old spare VGA cable (pretty hefty) with a sleek new AmazonBasics cable that got great reviews, and it was much worse (the text was "swimming"), so I now have some appreciation for older, heavier cables.(Also, I noticed this KVM was very similar to an IOGear product I was looking at. After some googling, it seems ATEN owns IOGear, so that's why.)

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Expensive, But Worth Your Expense
*by D***R on August 16, 2016*

Been using this bad guy in my office environment with two mini-ATX boxes stacked. Quick, reliable switching after more than a year. A tad expensive but I think you'll find it brings value. So I would say get it unless you want to spend more useless time searching. And NO to any reader thinking I'm a "shim" promoting a product. Never have done that. For minimum spaces, I like this little guy very much, even though it doesn't do a lot other than just switch. I appreciate Amazon for bringing world-market items like this to a stupid town (I live in) that thinks crayons are just for kids. Sheesh.

### ⭐ Avoid for PS/2. (Review from 4-port unit of same device)
*by M***N on February 21, 2022*

If you're buying this for PS/2 support, honestly you need to look elsewhere unless you're a hunt-and-peck typer who doesn't play even the simplest games.A rundown of some of the issues I've experienced (and yes, I even went through lengthy and unnecessary firmware upgrade for this unit which resolved a total of 0 of the following issues):USB Keyboard -> PS/2 Keyboard input: After about 10 seconds, I get stuck keys that won't un-stick unless I press them again. Games are unplayable using USB -> PS/2 for keyboards.PS/2 Keyboard -> PS/2 Keyboard input: You'd think, wouldn't you. However = 0-key rollover. I'm dead serious. Any key presses immediately cancel the preceding keys held. Again, games unplayable.USB Mouse -> PS/2 Mouse: Overloaded PS/2 input. The DPI rating of literally any modern PS/2 mouse apparently is far too much for the PS/2 bus. PS/2 devices send interrupt commands to the CPU which ask to be processed, so the DPI ratings of modern mice will very quickly overload any PS/2 system receiving them (even a 3.2ghz processor), unless the data is intelligently metered out to the PS/2 ports. Which, of course, it isn't in this device. The result is it actually can lock up the system until the mouse movement is processed, which yet again, makes even the most basic games unplayable. I have even had it cause stuck keys on keyboards not even connected with the KVM.I had a support ticket out with the manufacturer which I've abandoned since it's been ignored for about a week. Chatting with another user of this same switch, I found that they told them "this unit is functioning as designed". So that's good.I 100% would avoid Aten products unless you're only using them to switch USB devices, and even then I would recommend against them for any gaming functionality unless explicitly stated in the manual that the devices support n-key rollover and have mouse DPI support ranges. Avoid for PS/2.
