The CARTRIDGE filter is the main filter - NOT to be used for LIQUID vacuuming. The SPONGE filter is evidently used for LIQUID vacuuming. This SPONGE "sock-like" filter fits (stretches) over the same cage as the CARTRIDGE filter. The SPONGE tore the first time I tried to stretch it over the cage. I don't do LIQUID vacuuming in any case. The HEPA filter fits in its own little space and seems to do nothing but be "politically correct." It doesn't seem to get dirty. I have no clue how the folded paper DUST COLLECTOR works. The CARTRIDGE and HEPA filters are fairly easily cleanable.
