Great for solitary bees but product has nothing to do with honey or butterflies (false description)
My current nest has been filled up in just one season so i needed another for next year's bee activity. The bamboo used in this product is same as for my existing nest (site) and is just perfect. Ive found that using normal bamboo takes up too much room but this product has very narrow walled tubes nicely packed together. The tubes are exactly the right size for the solitary bees, whereas some other products on the market have the holes are far far too big. Tube holes should be max 10mm ideal is 6-9 from my several years of experience encouraging these bees. I should mention that this product has nothing to do with honey. This is not for honey bees as this is not a hive. This has nothing to do with butterflies either. Other insects might use it but ive not seen any evidence of that. Overall if you want to encourage solitary bees into you garden, and apparently they are better at pollinating your flowers etc than hive bees, then this is a straight forward no nonsense perfect product to encourage bees into your garden.Only thought is how well the wood will cope in wet weather over several winters, as the wood is soft wood and may not last long. . I may well add a safe preservative to the outside (only) alternatively and perhaps better to suggest overwinter in a cold dry shed and bring out again in the early spring. I would also advise to fix firmly to a wall of fence, in preference to hanging by the rope fixing provided, as bees prefer not to have the nest swinging around. (as they get confused) It' truly fascinating to watch the bees fill up the tubes and next season seeing them emerge, males first then later the females by the way, and go through the whole cycle over again. Product overall most recommended !
