This ice machine was my best friend after my total hip replacement for pain relief and swelling control (which I had none of this time!). It was like night and day versus using single ice packs I elected to use from the last time around. The temperature was never too much and I could even put it against my skin or with clothes on, and it still was completely useful and tolerated! Played a key role in my recuperation. I used the smaller sized 8 ounce water bottles along with a mix of water-exactly as the directions stated how much water to put in. Worked like a charm. On a side note, I also rented a “Game Ready” ice compression system, and it was just way too cold and extremely uncomfortable to have the whole inner part of my leg freezing cold also, especially when I’m trying to sleep. Example: stay on 40 minutes then off for 20 then it repeats the settings. We purchased a set of 60 plastic re-freezable ice cubes. We rotate 30 in the freezer and 30 in the unit. They stay cold a long time although I haven't timed it I'd guess 8 hours+. Then we scoop out the plastic cubes in to a plastic dish, dump the water that was added per instructions. Dump the frozen 30 cubes in and put the other 30 in the freezer. Then fill water to the recommended line. replace the lid and start the unit. Redo the schedule as needed (I do since I unplug the cord from the lid). This is how we do it but maybe you will do it a way that's easier for you but the unit works perfectly. Some reviews mention the hoses leaking. TIP: at the connectors the 2 hoses are separate and that allows 1 hose at a time to be connected. Working with both at the same time is too hard. Press the silver clip down and push the connectors together. the metal clip should be nearly back to where it was before pressing it.
