In short, it just means that the product meets certain standards set by Apple (it's part of Apple's licensing program), and should definitely be compatible with your iPhone/iPad/Apple Watch. There are many cables/adapters out there that are *not* MFi Certified. Many will likely still work fine; they're typically cheaper in price and quality, and can be attractive due to those lower prices,... However, you run the risk of running into more issues or even ruining your device's charging port or other internal components altogether. I unfortunately found this out the hard way and bought a cheap, non-MFi certified cable for my iPhone 8 a while back. It worked fine on day one, but just 2 days into it, the cable wouldn't charge or sync. I thought it was just the cable, but it ended up actually fusing-together a few of the metal leads inside the port itself, which destroyed the port on my iPhone...not a fun experience that I'd want to repeat as it was a big pain to get fixed. So, I'd just stick with MFI Certified products.
