He normally travels in a crate in the back of my Honda CRV and at that time, he could easily jump in or out of the cargo area where I keep the crate. For vet visits, however, he needs to be pre-medicated with two sedatives and he is too groggy to jump in and out. He's a big dog and it's not safe for me to lift him so I thought the steps would help. I really liked them, but for various reasons it turned out to be preferable for my dog to ride in the back seat of the car to and from vet visits, so I did not need the steps. Instead of returning them, however, I decided to keep them for future use when my aging dog would be less mobile. Sure enough, it's now two years later and my guy can no longer safely jump up to get in the crate (jumping down is still OK). I got out the steps and he easily mastered going up, so now we use them every time he needs to get into the car. I love that the step height can be adjusted by simply pulling the steps out further, making it exceptionally easy, safe, and non-scary for my dog to climb up. My dog weighs about 65 pounds and the steps support his weight with no problem. I have 2 lab-mastiffs weighing in at 100 pounds a piece, a 65 pound Husky, and a 45 pound mutt I found abandoned that no one seems too know the breed. The little guy loved it, the Husky took a minute but was ok, 1 lab-mastiff wouldn't use them but he has no problem jumping in my SUV so I didn't press, and my other guy - the entire reason I bought the stairs - my 100 pound baby who is killing my back because he is too afraid to jump, well he was not happy but with a lot of begging and a little pushing, he did use the stairs (twice now).
