Is the mounting recessed on the back?** A: Yes it is, about half an inch to accommodate the hinged lid on top. I had to build my own mounting block as there is no mounting hardware that came with my order. I would not have purchased this mailbox should I have known this beforehand. **Q: How far apart are the holes in the back? My present mailbox has 10" apart holes and I don't want to put more nails in brick.** A: This box is much more narrow. Holes are maybe 3-4" apart. **Q: Can this mailbox be mounted without the mounting hardware people mention? if not, what type of mounting hardware do you need?** A: It has 2 holes in the back for hanging.
