While I don't think this would prevent someone determined to steal your bike, it's very sturdy and will buy you time. The unit is kind of heavy but the sleeve around the chain makes it very smooth and comfortable to work with. As people have mentioned, the key is a little tricky to get in the right way as there seem to be multiple free rotating discs that need to be lined up for the key to be inserted all the way. I suspect this is an intentional design to combat someone trying to pick the lock.
