Maharshi Valmiki's Ramayana — the Adikavya (first great poem) of Indian civilization — was composed sometime between 500 BCE and 100 CE, making it one of the oldest narrative epics in the world. In the tradition's own account, the shloka metre was born when Valmiki, overcome with grief at seeing a hunter kill a mating bird, spontaneously uttered the first verse of poetry — and in that moment, the kavya tradition of India was born. The epic's 24,000 shlokas across seven Kandas (Bala, Ayodhya, Aranya, Kishkindha, Sundara, Yuddha, and Uttara) have been retold in over 300 languages and scripts, and have shaped the moral consciousness of South and Southeast Asia for two millennia. Unlike the later devotional retellings of Tulsidas (Awadhi) or Krittibas (Bengali), the Valmiki original carries the full human complexity of the characters — their psychology, their moral dilemmas, and their humanity alongside their divinity. Unlike Tulsidas's devotional Ramcharitmanas or the Adhyatma Ramayana's Vedantic reading, the Valmiki original carries the story's full human weight: Dasharatha's crushing political dilemma, Kaikeyi's complex motivations, Ram's extraordinary inner conflict between dharma-as-duty and dharma-as-love, Sita's unshakeable dignity under extreme duress, and Ravana's grandeur alongside his fatal flaw. These moral complexities are what make the Ramayana the inexhaustible guide to dharma that it has been for three millennia — and they are fully present only in Valmiki's original. This English edition makes that source available to the global Hindu diaspora and English-speaking seekers worldwide in a faithful, fluent translation that preserves the original's depth. Faithful English translation — preserves the philosophical and moral complexity of the Valmiki original Traditional illustrations — major episodes depicted in devotional artistry Format: Granthakaar/Large Edition Ideal for: Ram Navami, systematic Ramayana study, the global Hindu diaspora and English-speaking seekers worldwide's home library, year-round gifting — diaspora Diwali season (October-November) sees peak demand gifting About This Edition This English edition from Gita Press, Gorakhpur brings India's most sacred scriptures to English-speaking readers worldwide — the Hindu diaspora in the UK, USA, Canada, Australia, and Southeast Asia, as well as students of comparative religion, Indology, and world philosophy.
