The tape is flat and twists around necessitating taking the unit apart and rewinding by hand after getting out the kinks. Yes the cord can cut your hand if you try to use your hand to grab the cord instead of using the brake built into the handle but so can the tape to a lesser extent. This should only be an issue if you are not paying attention to your dog and surroundings.
