I'm making crafts.** A: The one I received couldn't Poke a hole in a piece of paper. It was manufactured without a sharp point and I had to use a bench grinder to get it sort of sharp. These aren't real expensive, I wish I had just gone to a hardware and I'm sure they would have something to puncture A bottlecap **Q: Is this awl any good for bookbinding?** A: I don't know bookbinding but if you need a sharp point this is not it. It was supposed to be American made but is made in China. The quality is typical cheap Chinese made. The point is rounded - more rounded than the coarsest ball point pen. **Q: How thick is the metal shaft?** A: I wouldn't really know how to measure this. This is a perfectly good awl except that mine came with extruded metal on the sharp point, a manufacturing mistake.
