Fun but Repetitive. Minor Language Barrier Issues
Uppers is quite the mixed bag. The fighting mechanics are pretty light, but combat feels satisfying all the same. The game runs well, sounds pretty good and offers a sizable roster of characters to unlock as you take your delinquents to the top of the gang violence food chain. It also gets repetitive very quickly, but remains fun in small doses because of how quirky it is.Having no knowledge of Japanese, Uppers poses a few difficulties. One, the story seems to basically be "go beat up these guys, then their boss(es), to recruit their female manager to your side and then be able to use the boss as a playable character down the line." Nothing wrong with that, but if the story is legitimately good, or funny... I couldn't tell you. The second issue... we're getting to that.Levels in Uppers are pretty simple, mostly consisting of arenas full of goons (and maybe a boss or two) for you and your teammate to beat up. You have access to punches, kicks, throws, blocks and some powered-up special moves. The twist is that each of these arenas features female fans cheering on your violent displays. And they want to see you do cool stuff! But if you can't read Japanese, then you won't be able to meet their objectives (things like landing a 30 hit combo, or performing 5 throws in 30 seconds) etc. The objectives help with completion (success means getting the cheerleader's phone number!), powering up your character etc., and can be important. Some of the objectives are easy to figure out, others not so much. But is it fun? Well, the combat is. What Uppers does really well is create situations where you can take out your frustrations on your opponents. Want to dump a goon head first down a manhole? Do it. Throw a guy into an electrified sign? Sure! Punch a guy into a helicopter above, causing it to crash? Doable. Grab a dude's face and slam dunk it into a basketball net? Oh yeah. Throwing a motorcycle at someone? Absolutely. And many more. It's ridiculous and lightheared, but in small doses it's really satisfying. As you play, you also rack up points to upgrade characters and purchase outfits for them and their... supporters. Just a quick word on that - as you play the missions, you unlock young ladies to... manage your crew, I guess? They confer passive bonuses based on their level of comfort with your crew. This is a game from the Senran Kagura team (I think), so there are some sexual themes/pervy menu options present, though nothing as blatant as in the aforementioned series. Older teens and above should be fine with this game. The last point I'll make is that the game gets repetitive quickly. The arenas are pretty simple and have a good amount of elements to interact with, but you'll be fighting in the same ones again and again. The combat doesn't offer a ton of variation, but there is a good amount of playable characters to add some variety. Is it worth buying? If you like quirky beat'em ups and don't mind the language barrier, I think so. I'm happy I picked it up, and do return to it every so often to play a level or two. If you wanted to complete the whole game, I expect it would take 20+ hours and some grinding at the higher difficulty level.

Uppers is Pretty Rad
Uppers is a hidden gem on the vita. At the moment of writing this review this game has not been localized in America (hopefully it is one day). So if you are a fan of stylish beat'em ups then this is a must own. Made by the developers of Kenka Bancho: Badass Rumble, Uppers feels like an sequel to that game. The combat feels solid and the effects are really impressive on the vita. The one big draw back is that there is some creepy content in this game. I wish it wasn't in the game, since it can stand on its own as a game, and it is pretty off putting.Overall, Uppers is an electric and fast paced action game that the vita needs. This is an easy recommendation from me.
