Q: do you need to plug this into the reset button to control it with the controller and if I dont will the fan work?

No. I didn’t connect the reset cable and was still able to control the effects, mode, light color. It doesn’t have brightness and fan speed thou even if the remote has those buttons. Rep say you cannot control the brightness and fan speed or even turn off fans which is a bummer.

Q: Can these fans be hooked in the motherboard header. I don’t care about hooking the box up to control rgb?

No, these fans have special connector and can only be connected to the included controller box
