Decals are included to enhance authenticity, making it a must-have for history buffs and model enthusiasts aiming to capture the stealthy night raider that changed naval warfare. ## Description Product Description The PBY served many rolls during WWII, including anti-submarine warfare, night attack and naval interdiction, and search and rescue. The seaplane is still used in the modern era as a water bomber in aerial firefighting. From the Manufacturer This is a 1/72 scale Academy plastic model kit. This Consolidated Aircraft PBY-5A was used by every branch of the U.S Military, especially for cargo transport and patrol bombing. The initials "P.B.Y." were determined by the U.S. Navy aircraft designation system of 1922, PB representing "Patrol Bomber" and Y being the code used for the aircraft's manufacturer, Consolidated Aircraft. During World War II, PBYs were used in anti-submarine warfare, patrol bombing, convoy escorts, search and rescue missions (especially air-sea rescue) and cargo transport. The "5A" variation was was produced from October 1941 - January 1945. It had Hydraulically-actuated, retractable tricycle landing gear, for amphibious operation, a new gun position with bow "eyeball" turret equipped with twin .30 machine guns (on some later units), improved armor and self-sealing fuel tanks. Several squadrons of PBY-5As and -6As in the Pacific theater were specially modified to operate as night convoy raiders. Outfitted with state-of-the-art magnetic anomaly detection gear and painted flat black, these "Black Cats" attacked Japanese supply convoys at night. Between August 1943 and January 1944, "Black Cat" squadrons had sunk 112,700 tons of merchant shipping, damaged 47,000 tons and damaged 10 Japanese warships. The last active military PBYs were not retired from service until the 1980s. Even today, over 70 years after its first flight, the aircraft continues to fly as an airtanker in aerial firefighting operations all over the world. This kit includes fully engraved panel lines as well as rivet details, detailed cockpit, waist gunner's compartment and blisters, as well bomb and engine detail and a painting and decal guide. Optional parts are included for building an early or late version of the model. The "Black Cat" will be a beautiful and impressive addition to any collection. Review: Check scale size before ordering if you are keeping to a consistency. - Its a great model but, I thought I was getting a 1:48 scale but it's still a great model. Review: Perfect little metal plane - This airplane and its many variations was likely the most helpful aircraft of the war. With a range of 2504 miles and a speed of 195 mph it would remain in the air more than a day. Wa t to go for a ride? Maybe not...but my oh my, could this aircraft search abd rescue...indeed it could bomb also...subs beware. A wonderful aircraft well worth the memories and the honor to be reminded of it. ## Features - Detailed model kit. - Glue and Paints not included. - Easy to follow instructions. - Kit suitable for ages 14 to adult. - Optional parts to build as early or late versions included - Highly detailed waist gunner's compartment and blisters - Fully engraved panel lines - turret and cockpit details - Decals included to enhance realism ## Technical Specifications | Specification | Value | |---------------|-------| | ASIN | B0006O06F4 | | Additional Features | Portable | | Age Range (Description) | Adult | | Age Range Description | Adult | | Art Craft Kit Type | Model Airplane Building Kit | | Brand | ACADEMY HOBBY MODEL KITS | | Brand Name | ACADEMY HOBBY MODEL KITS | | Color | Black,Navy | | Customer Reviews | 4.3 out of 5 stars 228 Reviews | | Global Trade Identification Number | 00603550021374 | | Included Components | Instruction Guide | | Item Dimensions | 17 x 3.5 x 10.6 inches | | Item Weight | 0.27 kg | | Item dimensions L x W x H | 17 x 3.5 x 10.6 inches | | Manufacturer | Model Rectifier Corp. | | Manufacturer Part Number | 12487 | | Material | Plastic | | Material Type | Plastic | | Model Name | PBY 5A | | Model Number | 2137 | | Number of Pieces | 1 | | Product Style | Modern | | Scale | 1:48 | | Seasons | Winter | | Set Name | PBY 5A | | Size | Medium | | Subject Character | Consolidated PBY-5A Catalina | | Theme | Cat | | UPC | 033170333876 787799590386 603550021374 | | Warranty Description | Manufacturer will repair at its expense any product proven defective by reason of improper workmanship or materials. ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Nice details and quality. Good assembly skills required. *by D***C on August 26, 2018* I've been an amateur scale modeler for 60 years, and overall am pleased with this kit. It is impressive in regard to it's exterior detail and the quality of parts being very well molded. The only negatives are with the instruction details and with "molded in" part location points. The instructions are not clear as to the exact position to which certain parts are to be aligned to. The drawing details are rather small and crowded with many adjoining parts not clearly shown as to exact location points. This is most evident with interior bulkheads, wing tip floats, and wheel gear. It takes a great deal of "dry fitting" to figure out where the part should be attached at the raised locators. More detailed drawing of those areas would be most helpful. Another issue is a lack of precise "order of assembly" details. Unless a great deal of planning and dry fitting is employed, one must be very careful to not glue items together before assuring each separate component is assembled in the correct order. ## Frequently Bought Together - Academy Consolidated PBY-5A Catalina "Black Cat" - Cement Glue Value Pack Testors 2-7/8 fl oz tubes - Academy TBM-3" USS Bunker Hill Airplane Model Building Kit, Navy --- ## Why Shop on Desertcart? - πŸ›’ **Trusted by 1.3+ Million Shoppers** β€” Serving international shoppers since 2016 - 🌍 **Shop Globally** β€” Access 737+ million products across 21 categories - πŸ’° **No Hidden Fees** β€” All customs, duties, and taxes included in the price - πŸ”„ **15-Day Free Returns** β€” Hassle-free returns (30 days for PRO members) - πŸ”’ **Secure Payments** β€” Trusted payment options with buyer protection - ⭐ **TrustPilot Rated 4.5/5** β€” Based on 8,000+ happy customer reviews **Shop now:** [https://www.desertcart.sc/products/3679714-academy-consolidated-pby-5a-catalina-black-cat](https://www.desertcart.sc/products/3679714-academy-consolidated-pby-5a-catalina-black-cat) --- *Product available on Desertcart Seychelles* *Store origin: SC* *Last updated: 2026-10-06*
