UHMW (ultra high molecular weight) polyethylene is an impact-, chemical-, and moisture-resistant plastic that has excellent abrasion resistance and a low-friction surface. UHMW is more rigid than LDPE and HDPE, and has better abrasion resistance than PTFE.Plastic refers to a group of synthetic or semi-synthetic materials that have been engineered to achieve specific properties. Before I started my project (linkage guard for off-road motorcycle/high-impact application), I took it out back and put it on top of a cinder block, then used a hammer to attempt to break off a 1" corner section. It didn't flinch at all, and mind you this is only 1/4" thick. It did eventually bend a little after repeated pounding but no sign of cracking, splintering or breakage. When I tried to cut it with a hack saw, it fought me hard.
