Review: I bought this to aerate some tough clay patches in the yard. This is the right thing to do it with. The tool is a good size, I am 6'3" and didn't break my back with it, and also very solid. The wood handle seems like it will last forever and the fork itself is very solid and plunged into the hard packed clay pretty easily on a morning after a rain. I would definitely recommend this tool above any of the 'rolling devices' one sees advertised for aeration. Heat treated to withstand more force ?** A: The fork and handle sleeve are all one piece/VERY strong on this one, which prevents the fork from detaching (as they do on almost ALL others on the market). Using it in a large commercial daylily farm for over 5 years (digging huge clumps from raw red NC clay and rocks by the tens of thousands), I've just inspected the two I originally bought... not a bend or need of repair anywhere on the units. These are, by far (and in 25 years in business), the best digging forks I've ever purchased. **Q: how long are the tines?** A: 11" to where they meet the cross-bar, and a 7.5" spread. Overall, a bit larger than the cheapies... but the tines are forged more rounded than flat, which has turned out to be less damaging to roots of plants I'm lifting to divide. I must say, these are the best diggers I've EVER laid hands on... after 20 years in biz. I have 4 of these now, and will buy nothing else. **Q: What is the difference between the 4550DF and this model?
