## Overview

Liquitex Professional Gloss Varnish (237ml) is a premium, water-based acrylic varnish designed to provide a permanent, non-yellowing, and water-resistant glossy finish. It dries quickly to a hard, flexible surface that protects artwork from UV light, dirt, and environmental damage. Safe, non-toxic, and suitable for both indoor and outdoor use, it can be applied by brush or spray and is fully compatible with Liquitex acrylic paints and mediums.

## Description

Liquitex offers the broadest range of acrylic mediums to inspire creativity at every stage of the painting process. Varnish Mediums protect the painting surface from the environment and protect the pigments from ultraviolet light. Additionally, varnishes can be used to change or unify a painting’s surface sheen. Liquitex varnishes come in several different sheens which can all be intermixed for a customized sheen. Liquitex Archival Permanent Varnish Finishing Medium is a low-odor, permanent and durable medium with water-based technology, translucent when wet, clear when dry. Resists discoloring (non-yellowing, non-fogging) due to humidity heat and ultraviolet light. Can be used with Spray Paint, Heavy Body, Soft Body. Dries to a non-tacky, hard, flexible surface that is resistant to dirt retention. Hard, archival, non-yellowing and water-resistant when dry. Protects acrylic color from harsh elements. For interior and exterior use. APPLICATION: Apply as a final varnish over dry acrylic paint. Varnish surface and environment must be clean, dry and dust free. Acrylic paintings must be completely dried and cured for 48-72 hours before varnishing. Application may be done by brush or spray. Generally a sprayed application will be thinner, smoother and more even. Rolling or sponging application is not recommended. Caution: Acrylic paints and mediums become increasingly brittle in cold weather. Do not apply below 60 degrees Fahrenheit. Visit our Liquitex desertcart Storefront for full product assortment.

Review: Excellent - My favorite varnish. It's easy to use, exceptional quality and it goes a long way. I got the Gloss one in the 32 oz bottle first, then I went with the gallon just because I do not want to run out of it. I have nothing negative to say about it. It does not yellow, it leaves a satin finish and it goes on smoothly with no issue. I know it's better to use the sponge applicator, but I use a regular brush every time with zero issues. I just wash the brush with warm water and dish soap and it cleans up well. The varnish levels up and dries very fast. I usually apply 2-3 coats, but lately I decided 1 coat is enough. More coats makes it look shinier.
Review: Works great if applied correctly and know a few tips to get the best results - I HIGHLY RECOMMEND practicing the use of this varnish before applying to a grand work of art as this can ruin it very quickly. I use this brands high gloss varnish to cover, protect and add a shiny gloss clear coat over my acrylic paintings. Even though Liquitex brand cost more it's worth the money for the end results. Other cheaper varnishes I've used have turned out to dry with a milky fog look, definitely not clear or near the shine level of what one thinks of GLOSS finish. A poor quality varnish can ruin a perfect masterpiece. _________________________________________________ I have learned a few tricks to create a glass smooth finish that dries 100% clear. Feel free to try them yourself. *apply generous amount on art work. *use silicone brush (reduces brush stroke ) to spread thick layer over artwork. *once cover in thick coat, begin to smooth varnish and remove extra run off by Holding brush almost horizontal with no pressure drag the brush across the top from left to full right past the canvas end allowing runoff to fall away from art work. The weight of brush will be enough to remove extra product but leave enough for the perfect coat thickness. Use light shinning off canvas to judge thickness. 2 coats will smooth the grit texture of canvas. * Any start or stop point of the brush will show up, so start stroke off canvas travel across to the other side continuing the stroke off the canvas. Over lap strokes at edge to smooth previous brush line. * Since product starts drying rather quickly, work fast and DO NOT ATTEMPT TO FIX ANY BLEMISHES or thin areas AFTER you've begun to smooth product. It will only make it worse. Can be fixed with another full coat. *i alternate vertical and horizontal strokes between coats to further prevent lines from forming. * Too thick = milky foggy wavy finish *Too thin= irregular shinny finish or none at all. *Mess with product while drying= lumpy uneven milky finish ( its sticky while drying) __________________________________________ personally i do about4-6 coats for a deep clear coat look. Its very hard to see in my pictures since yeah. the stuff dries clear. good luck and "happy little accidents"

## Questions & Answers

**Q: What's the difference between matte medium and matte varnish?**
A: A medium is something you add to or use with paint to create specific effects. A varnish is a protective coat on something.

**Q: Does it works on ceramic/plastic/glass mugs?I would be thankful if you reply, thx for reading**
A: I'm sorry I can't answer that question because I used it for a wood item. But I think that if it doesn't say it's for ceramic/plastic/glass it's not going to work. Usually if it did work on those things it would say so.

**Q: Is it water based?**
A: Yes. "Liquitex Archival Permanent Varnish Finishing Medium is a low-odor, permanent and durable medium with water-based technology, translucent when wet, clear when dry..."

**Q: Is this uv protected. Self leveling?**
A: Yes

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Good product, good value. Read directions and suggestions for use carefully.
*by C***T on December 9, 2025*

This is such a great product. Although it is typically used for a finish on oil or acrylic art, I purchased it to put on top of, like a glaze, my unfinished tile coasters, which I had painted and stamped. Upon further review, I realized this product could withstand the cold of an iced beverage, it would not work well with heated beverages. So, I began using it as a topcoat for my handmade Christmas ornaments. Works like a charm, and a little goes a long way. I watched an artist's YouTube video to find the specific application process, and I recommend doing the same. It's super easy, but I would have completely done it the wrong way if I had not watcched the video.
