The claim is that you'll lose some signal strength in the system with the open end exposed to the environment. I had an open end dangling behind my shop where it had been hooked up to a 5th wheel camper in years past. Since this was split off near the middle of a long cable run I decided to heed the advice I read and replace my electrical tape "terminator" with one of these official terminators. I haven't noticed any dramatic change in the signal strength, but I think the length of my cable run and the direction of the antenna outweigh the importance of these terminators in affecting my signal strength at the TVs. I still give them 5 stars since they do fit the cable end and apparently make my cable meet "best practice".
