british army cap badges of the twentieth century
This book is an excellent reference for those who are interested in starting to collect cap badges or just want some basic information on cap badges. The author has given a real nice overview of the subject and for those interested cap badges are really neat. if you are staring out i highly suggest you buy this book. I am sure there are more in depth references available but this is a great starter.

Pretty, but not what I had hoped for
This is a very attractive book. It is full of beautiful full-color photographs of a number of different British cap badges and other random items. But ultimately "British Army Cap Badges of the Twentieth Century" is disappointing in a number of respects:1) While the title indicates that the book is about the badges themselves, this book is really much more about the process of collecting British militaria insignia. I suppose that this was published in the "Crowood Collectors'" series may have given some indication of the book's actual thrust, that indication was rather more implicit than explicit.2) Again, despite the title, a significant amount of space is given to other British military insignia that only have a tangential, if any, relationship to cap badges. The subject of British cap badges is more than ample enough to fill up several books, so this filler really just seems to be a device for making up for a serious deficiency of depth.3) While the photographs of badges in the book are quite nice, they are not even remotely close to being comprehensive, or even well organized. Some regiments or organizations are represented, many are not. Even those that are represented are inadequately described, if they are described at all. And even these photographs do not appear to be organized according any sort of rational system.Of all of these problems, perhaps the biggest problem here lies mainly in the fact that the title does not represent what the book contains. Perhaps if this book was titled "Collecting Twentieth Century British Insignia" it would warrant as many as 3 stars. But overall, I found this book attractive, but ultimately disappointing. It is a military themed coffee table book, but not a serious reference work. Look for "Cap-Badges of the British Army 1939-45" by G.L.D. Alderton as a good indication of what this book could have looked like had it been properly focused or organized.

Wrong title
The person who made the review giving the book three stars is correct. This book was mistitled. It should read COLLECTING British Army Cap Badges of the 20th Century. I wanted a catalog book with images of the cap badges for all regiments in the 20th century. This was not in any way organized for that. It is an attractive book and is probably helpful for the collector, but I wanted to know about the symbols themselves.
