I put these up 2 x / week and they work great. I take a hack saw and about 9 inches from the end slice through the back. I may even cut an in/ inch and a half slit. I bend that 9 inch part back. That 9 inch section is so low that you can put the two small screws right from the end into the top of the end cap. The 9 inch back is also bent down and will cover the back where the gutter over extends the roof. My experience is birds don't like being around these at all anyway. To be extreme, Home depot sells some bird repellent blue would guarantee that no birds would come by.
