Don't force it, just let it do it's thing. You'll need extra sanding replacements because it goes through them fairly quickly, but even the rougher sandpaper leaves the wood at virtual finishing condition. You can save on replacing sand paper by turning them on the sanding heads. They stick really well, even when turning them to use the other end of the sandpaper. If I had to do it all over again, I'd still get this but without wondering if it was going to do the fine sanding like I hoped it would, because it's great. One thing, it is 12-volt, so you'll have to get their transformer for this to plug into for it to work since it will not plug into the wall plugs. Thought it was to be included but we did not receive it?** A: Proxxon makes several power tools that use the same transformer. I’m thankful that I only need one tranformer for my tools, saves me money. **Q: This is a pen sander for hobbies. Why do so many negative reviewers state they used it for putty, adhesives, etc., not lightly sanding just wood?** A: In my projects I'll fill with sparkle and plastic wood. I also use epoxy sculp to build on the material. The pen sander is for fine detail work not quick reduction. Why the negative reviews? There's a size gap between small power sanders and the Proxxon line. There were time I encountered details that were too small for a palm sander had to be laboriously sanded by hand. The Proxxon sander can sand most of this areas. However, the sanding pads aren't that aggressive. They also wear out with use. The ones I use are 180 grit compared to 100 on a palm sander. The area of the sanding pad isn't that large. Say the end of my little finger compared to a quarter sheet of sandpaper. I own to thinking I could sand the same way as I did with a palm sander. To speed things up I take standard press on sandpaper pads and cutout pieces to fit the small pads. That speeds things up. However, heat buildup cause the adhesive to weaken. In brief, you use the sander as it's designed. It won't reduce large areas quickly. It will get into detailed areas. I swapped to a standard lighter socket plug for a more universal power supply availability. I bought it for paint touchup and inside edge detail sanding and de-burring. It seems to work well on the aluminum I've tested it on.
