Thinking it was the start capacitor, I purchased and installed this one (along with a new run capacitor because I thought they were both old so I might as well replace them both.) I turned on the compressor and...tripped the breaker. I tightened all the wire connections thinking that might be the problem and...tripped the breaker. Out of frustration and the need to have the compressor working, I took it to an electric motor repair shop. They tested the new capacitor (it was perfect) and installed it. Ran perfect. After paying $142 to the shop (grrr) I took it home and plugged it in. Tripped the breaker. Took it to another outlet on a different circuit and plugged it in. It started and ran perfectly. That's when it dawned on me that the problem was likely a faulty breaker. Switched out the breaker and flipped on the compressor. You guessed it, it ran fine. The moral of my $142 story is don't be dumb like me. Test your "bad" capacitor if you have that capability (I didn't).
