Review: Clean, grassfed whey protein for athletes-- at a fair price - We use a LOT of protein powder-- ~ 5lbs a month, and this has become one of our go-to products (National Team athletes). The price is fair, especially for a grass-fed product, and it is high-quality and clean-- no additives, flavors, sweeteners, or emulsifiers in the Plain version. I use this daily in protein shakes of all sorts (pre-workout, meal replacement, recovery, pre-sleep) and having something without fake flavoring or sweeteners gives me all sorts of flexibility to make things work for my tastes and purposes. We also use this to bake with, as it is very neutral in flavor and works well in healthier bars, brownies, etc. It smells clean and fresh, like a milk protein should, and does not have added sugar. Calories are in line with other non-flavored whey powders. Be aware that because this whey has no added ingredients and does not use emulsifiers or lecithins, it does require a blender bottle or mixer to blend fast. If you don't use a blender bottle or mixer, you can put it in the water/ liquid, give it a stir and let it sit for 5-10 minutes, and it will be easier to mix in. But that's a very small issue, especially considering how well this protein powder works and how clean it is. **Q: What is the difference between this and "the raw organic whey" other than one is usda certified organic and the other isn't?**
A: The "organic" is better because of closer monitoring--less likely some of the grass is coated with automobile exhaust or the cows are given any antibiotic or hormone. Also--the "organic" has a small 12 oz option even though all Amazon listings are titled for 5 pounders. And as of 2021.03 in either size the "organic" price is reasonable. And with this brand both "organic" and "grass fed" versions are labeled "100%  grass-fed"--so Mr. Wilson's answer--that "grass fed" varieties might have some advantage--is thoughtful but does not apply in this case. But most important is the "cold processing" used in both varieties. It took me years to pony up for the smaller and more expensive "organic" whey sold by Now Foods--but I finally decided to try it--and immediately noticed less "heaviness in stomach" i.e. greater "digestibility"--due to "lower temperature processing." Can't wait to try this new brand which goes two steps further--organic + cold processed + grass fed. I might be disappointed and in any case each individual should decide for themselves. P.S. do not fall for the gimmicks of some brands like "extra high glutathione content" or etc. They are invariably less digestible or succulent. And any supposed advantage is insignificant compared to getting capsules for "reduced glutathione" or whatever desired component. Digestibility is key. Also the more digestible the less you need and so that again adds digestibility. One level teaspoon at a time can be added to various foods and beverages without being noticed. Whether on a muscle-gain or a weight-loss diet, whether athlete, elderly or cancer patient--a lack of one essential amino acid can derail your health--whey makes sure you have the basics of all. And all those vegan proteins--yuk! My neighbor got pancreatic cancer by relying on those high-stress indigestible sources. Whey is universally recognized by holistic practitioners, athletes, GP's and oncologists as potentially life-saving. The aging process--and many disease processses--are partly a vicious cycle of slow starvation. The weaker you get--the less efficiently you digest--and the weaker you get. Protein is like money--it does not make you healthy or happy exactly--but can be difficult to get or to digest--and if you don't get it easily--you have to expend a huge amount of energy that you or your glandular system could have spent making you healthy or happy. The only other protein supplement that I would heartily suggest is--go to any Chinese restaurant and take home a quart of fresh Egg Drop Soup--and take it regularly--well warmed up, as much as feels good, whether the tablespoon or the cup.

**Q: Why is it labeled raw when it is heat treated?**
A: These answers are contradictory.  “Flash pasteurization” is high heat for a short time.  161F for 15 sec is USDA standard process for milk in the store, so there is nothing new there.  There is also slow pasteurization = low heat for a long time.  

You do not want “raw”, that is, unpasteurized milk product, because you could easily get quite sick from germs remaining in the powder (e.g., Brucella, Campylobacter, Cryptosporidium, E. coli, Listeria, Salmonella). None of the descriptions explain the “raw” descriptor, which sounds like marketing.

**Q: What is the difference between "raw organic whey" and "raw grass-fed whey"? why is it less expensive?**
A: Raw Organic Whey is USDA certified Organic.  The USDA Organic seal on Raw Organic Whey guarantees higher regulatory standards regarding how the cows are raised as well as how the whey is processed. I decided to try out the 12 oz size. I'm going to break it down into pros and cons. Pros * A2/A2 milk - I'm extremely sensitive to dairy products that are A1 based and this gave me no issues whatsoever. I don't really care that it's not certified as A2 since it looks like they're using all Jersey cows. * Very good quality protein - With a little math it's easy to see that the protein content is about 84%, which is approaching whey isolate content. * Excellent amino acid profile - Enough said. * No additives - Dietary gums, emulsifiers, and fillers (e.g. xanthan gum, carrageenan, lecithin, etc.) to make it easier to blend/mix can cause all sorts of digestive issues in the long run. This has none. Useful for anyone following any diet program from Dr. Will Davis (Wheatbelly, Undoctored, Super Gut). * Price is very competitive - When you look at how expensive most A2 whey protein is, it's hard to miss the fact that it's priced closer to common A1 type whey protein (what you find virtually everywhere). * Taste was neutral - Did not taste cheesy or overly strong. Cons * Can have some impurities - after seeing some of the other reviews I decided to run the whole package through a sieve and found a grain of rice and a few small broken pieces of rice. Not a deal breaker for me, but it could be off-putting to some. * No measuring scoop is included - Not a big issue but it could be bothersome to anyone that doesn't have an extra one in their kitchen. I had to use one from another brand. As an additional note, it's not easy to mix with a spoon due to the fact that it has no additives. But I would say that this is a feature, not a bug. I intend to order some more to verify the issue with impurities and then I will update the review. *** Update 4/24/2022 Purchased the 5 pound bag a little over a month ago. Protein quality is still excellent but a small amount of impurities remain. Most of the impurities are rice fragments (again), but I did find a single piece of black plastic shaped like a rice kernel. I'm attaching pictures. I still think it's a worthwhile product although it takes a little time out of my schedule to filter through an entire 5-pound bag searching for impurities. I'm updating my rating to 5 stars with the hope that they will continue to improve their quality control. Will update my review if anything changes.
