Review: Tiny! Works! (so far) charges a smartphone - Read the other reviews and decided to give this a go. So far so good, on day one. At first I left my phone (Moto X) in the sun under the shade of the device and it charged really nicely, until the phone overheated and stopped charging. When I moved my phone into some real shade and left the Lixada panel in the full California mid-day sun, the phone charged from 50% to 100% in a bit more than an hour. This is replacing a larger 10W panel that died, before it broke it was performing about the same, so I'm happy with the rate of this device. It is tiny, compact, and seems well-enough made. Interested to see how it performs on an upcoming week long trip in a small sailboat. UPDATE: after three weeks, the Lixada is still working. Using it daily to charge my phone. Takes 3-4 hours to go from near empty to near full. Took it on a trip packed in a book, it didn't break. So far so good for this tiny inexpensive lightweight solar USB charger. UPDATE: now 4 months later, using this almost every day to charge my phone, still working Update: 3 years later... The market has changed... Review: This product a scam - I'm an electrical engineer that worked in the solar industry. I tested the unit and it produced just enough voltage to make it look like it is charging a device, but no charging current is flowing, so your device will never charge. When I opened the unit to look at the regulator it became clear this is a true scam product. As you can see from the picture, most of the components that should be mounted to the circuit board are missing. A large resistor, marked 390, is soldered diagonally to make a connection so the the solar cell is connected directly to the USB output through the resistor. This means that the solar cell is just connected directly to the USB socket with about 44 ohms of series resistance. So while this circuit will output a voltage making it appear that it is a charger, as soon as you try and draw current the voltage will collapse (it is just dropped across the 44 ohms). I measured the solar cell on its own, it has an open circuit voltage of about 5.7V and a short circuit current of ~800mA - this looks pretty typical for this type of cell. Beyond that, even if it had a voltage regulator, this product cannot work as described - it is allegedly a 'High-Power' 10 Watt charger - however as you can see from the picture it is quite small. I measured the size of the silicon cells, there are 10 cells in the panel, each measures about 12.3 cm x 2 cm, for a total area of 10 x 12.3 x 2 = 246 cm2 (I'm being generous and ignoring the two cells with diagonal cut corners). Standard test conditions used to rate solar cell power are 1000 W/m2, or 0.1 W/cm2. The best silicon solar cell efficiency is about 25%, so you can calculate the absolute maximum power this panel can produce by 0.1W/cm2 x 246 cm2 x 25% = 6.15 W, which is considerably less than 10 W and is the absolute best possible case, not including the likely lower efficiency of the cell and the losses in the voltage regulator circuit. This is not a 10 W charger and in fact it's not physically possible for it to ever get close to 10 W. This product cannot work, it appears designed to fool the buyer - DO NOT BUY.

At first I left my phone (Moto X) in the sun under the shade of the device and it charged really nicely, until the phone overheated and stopped charging.
