Great laptop at a good price
I bought this computer for my daughter as a replacement for an old laptop that she had literally taped together to make it work.Anyway, the Gateway was recommended by an I.T. friend as a replacement at a reasonable price. It also helped that Amazon was selling it at a pre-Christmas discount. I have a p.c. Gateway for myself but hadn't really thought of it as a laptop. The laptop has far exceeded ny daughter's expectations for her use. It fired up and synched with our wi-fi; no problem. It has good sped and power. As a personal/home computer, I'd recommend it. Downside? My daughter does not like Windows 8 but the machine will upgrade to 8.1; a project my I.T. friend will undertake soon. I bought the machine based on price and four star rating. I'd give it a 5 star because of value and ;performance.

I CAN'T START MY COMPUTER AND CAME WITH PACKARD BELL LOGO INSTEAD GATEWAY!!!
It is a trap, my laptop's monitor has printed packard bell logo instead gateway, same logo is presented in splash screen when W8 starts. Also, for now i can't start my OS, because a batch file called AFT.bat runs immediatly after the W8 starts and blocks any input while this test is running and takes 80 minutes to unblock it itself(a countdown appears) and when the test finishes a fullcolor screen is showed in some asian language plus the word: PASS, but, after this appears an error that says that the drivers can't be installed. How i can solve this? anybody has the same problem?

Very nice laptop!
This laptop is a very nice looking laptop, runs pretty fast, is light weight with decent battery life(seems to be about 4 hours)and I've updated it to windows 8.1.I think its ridiculous that reviewers on here are giving the laptop a low score because they don't like windows 8! Hey,why don't you go review windows 8 instead?? Personally for me with windows 8,its a little bit of a learning curve but its faster and nicer to look at and I like installing the different apps on the main screen similar to android. I also like the fact it has Bluetooth included but I definitely had to ditch Norton because it just don't do it for me.

So far so good!
I have had it less than a week. I have to confess I am a Gateway fan, there are not many of us left. Last year I bought a Samsung on one of Amazon's daily specials, hate it. It is so slow in opening a browser and once open it continues to be slow, hate it! So this would be my 7th Gateway between desktops and laptops in the last 20 years. When I purchased this one for an older Gateway that is fading I was concerned about 2 things the speed and well Gateway, being it was sold or merged and basically has few offerings anymore. I know nothing about processors and tried to read up on them a little and tried to compare them with other laptop offerings, but frankly I didn't know what I was doing, I just took a chance. It flies, even Explorer seems faster (not a typo) so that part has worked out. One thing I have always liked about Gateway is the touchpad pointing device. In shopping at stores I noticed most laptops now don't let you scroll with the one finger on the right side. This is just a conditioning thing, I have always liked it and this laptop has it and the option of using the 2 finger in the center of the touchpad. It has Windows 8, more cumbersome but not a problem. I didn't give it a 5 simply because I haven't had it long enough. I have to tell you it is very confusing buying a computer that's why I went with Gateway. I bought a ASUS a few years ago and didn't like him so I took a chance with one of my old reliable's.

Ok, but junk preloaded overload
The laptop itself is OK.The battery life is 3-4 hours MAX.The video card is supposed to be HD yet it is laggy when playing simple games. The main thing is all this preloaded junk that you need to do a step by step delete and even after the delete it takes up memory and has processes running in the background.I had to use a complete deleter program to get rid of all the "bells and whistles" they add.I feel that companies need to give us "web credits" towards the programs we want not preload useless junk.Example: Norton Antivirus...Windows 8 automatically uses defender, which is basically Microsoft Security essentials.Yet they include Norton, when the 2 are installed they cause conflict , allowing viruses to get by, because they kinda cancel each other out!Why have Symantic which is a huge resource hog!!?? Overall the PC is good the crAPPs they put on not so much!

Great Computer for Office
I bought 2 of these for work, 1 for me and 1 for my boss. They 100% meet my expectations for a computer under $400. They are quick, stable, small and light and have high functionality. My only complaint is that the volume is a little low. Hopefully will continue to see the computer perform well.I updated to 8.1 with no problems. Windows 8 takes some getting used to as does the multi-gesture touch pad.Running this computer for office use and it meet expectations. If you want a gaming computer or your do video production then you should probably plan on spending more than what this computer costs.

Updates without permission and PC no longer starting
Diagnosing my PCYour PC did not start correctlyWe restarted (did not work) We went to Advanced Options and Continued/ Troubleshot and eventually Turned off the bloody PC. I am so disappointed. 2 months and 13 days of use. What in the world! I need a PC that works. And then the bloody thing has the nerve to ask me if I want to delete my files IF I am keeping the pc for myself....why wouldn't I want to keep my BRAND NEW PC for myself or wipe the drive if I want to recycle MY BRAND NEW PC...again what in the world!
