I think they can be used without each other. **Q: Is there a power button? I plugged power into a working outlet, but the power did not turn on. Thinking if there is an alien/off button?** A: Don’t remember there is a button, just works. Water in? **Q: Can this be used for Carbonated water?** A: Where would the source of the carbonated water be? It would have to be from a pressurized Tap. This unit is VERY loud when cooling. I would think twice a lot it if you plan on putting it in a family area, kitchen etc **Q: Does it work on its side not standing up?** A: I would not suggest that you place this unit on its side. There are fan openings on the side that ventilate the unit for the cooling to work. Expand the photo of the unit and you should be able to see this aspect. Max water pressure is 50psi. After dealing with a leaky 1/2" regulator for days, finally found a tiny 1/4" ptc regulator and bought a ptc pressure gauge, both fairly cheap and got it going. It does require a filter, which I got on Amazon, also ptc. The instructions were adequate. With the addition of a fountain spigot we now have cold, filtered water out of a fountain that drains to the kitchen sink. The water temperature is not quite enough to give you a brain freeze, but it can be adjusted inside the box.
