They say it's a very sturdy plastic, it was bought for a baby's bedroom  xx **Q: Does this make a loud humming noise?** A: Depends what you call loud. My answer is NO. It may sound loud when first started up but soon settles down to a low hum which soon blends into other background noises. It also depends what speed you have it at. It also helps if you place it onto a place mat or something. You will soon get used to it & forget it is there.
