Nice on premise solution but network side is a nightmare.
Update after several months the device loses a cameras randomly so would highly recommend NOT buying this. It is not fit for purposeCheap and ok for basic CCTV DVR but some interesting issues on network. The DVR is quite well built and runs quiet and cool. Good connections and responsive via the USB. I replaced an old Maplin unbranded DVR with 4 cameras and was up and working in 5 minutes on the monitor but thats when things went a bit downhill. The mobile app is poor and regularly disconnects and I couldnt get it to connect to other well known mobile apps without poor streming. I ran a port scan on the box and this caused a reset as did the app so essentially useless on the network or via external port forward unless you want to use the chinese based cloud service and even then random disconnect. So for basic at hom euse it is fantastic but if you want to use it to remote monitor save you money and buy something a big more tested and grown up. The embedded linux is so insecure i compromised in about 20 minutes just over port 34567.

Needs a HeatSink and Fan, or Will Overheat.
KKmoon 8 Channel Standalone CCTV DVR Recorder 960H H.264 HDMI VGA Output Video Surveillance Pre-alarm Recording 8-ch video 2-ch Audio input Pre-alarm Recordin And P2P Cloud Etc Function Supported The problem with these DVRs, Is that they do not have an internal Heat sink, Or fan,so they over heat badly,Especially in the summer time, and will cause problems, and generally misbehave.I have modified mine with a very Large heat sink,Cut from an old CPU cooler and used thermal tape,To stick the heat sink to the main Cpu FPGA, That otherwise goes well over 70c+,And added a small fan,on to the case by cutting an appropriate hole, you can see the heatsink below the fan, in my pictures.Mine has been running fine for 18 Months now, But Only,Because of my above modifications. No crashes, or errors.I doubt many people have time to do this, Or the ability. You could buy an after market, Stick on heat sink, and fit it, when your fitting the Hard drive....It still needs a small fan,To cool the Hard drive though. You get what you pay for, As i bought this KKmoon DVR for just £36 on amazon, (2016)but the short comming, is the fact it Will Overheat, and fail to operate correctly, Long term, unless it has a Heat sink, And sufficient cooling.Spend more money, and buy a Better DVR, (£80+)Most other popular DVRs already have a heat sink and fan,Unless your into modifying things, like my self.I Hope this helps some people out, when looking for a cheap DVR.The particular Pcb board , on mine anyway is, CPU Hi3520D, Model: AHB7804T-EL.

Good box and good quality
Excellent dvr with full hd. Paired with some decent cameras these dvr works well. Networking needs setting up but once it has it works well over the internet or on my phone. I have used a different camera viewer on the phone as the supplied software crashes all the time. I have knocked one star off due to this and also the supplied remote is terrible and you have to be within 2 foot of the box to get it to work. Not a major issue as I use a wireless mouse to connect it. Fitted my own hard drive and it is quiet and works well. Reliable and also set it up to email me if issues arise or if someone cuts the camera cables or covers them. Set it to a static ip, fill in the correct information for the network in the network page and turn off the cloud service and open the ports on your router to the box so you can view your cameras.. Simple

Great value
Great value, I had a similar box to this one that blew the board after nearly 2 years of use so a upgraded replacement for under £30 is a bargain. This box works better with my cameras as it correctly sets them up, also it streams faster to my mobile devices. The upgraded software also a bonus as it allows better use of ip cameras.

Brilliant upgrade
I got this to replace an old Maplin Sentient DVR when I needed an extra channel. This is so much better! I accept the software isn't the best but just needs a little patience to set it up. Image quality is much higher and latency of remote access for better. I don't have any controlled or digital cameras but am tempted to get one now.

Which makes this hardware useless for my intentions unless I sit there all day ...
Needs snapshot via email after motion detected as standard, found that it cannot do this and opted for the email message instead. But even this fails by flooding my inbox with endless amounts of invalid motion detected messages. Even after selecting a small limited motion detection window per camera and lowest settings to stop any unwanted motion being detected - It still floods my inbox with hundreds emails per minute. Not sure if its faulty or not, but my previous DVR unit was much more stable and the motion detection was very accurate. This one just fires off many emails per second whether there's motion on screen or not??? To the extent I have had to switch of notifications and leave it to just record only. Which makes this hardware useless for my intentions unless I sit there all day staring at the impressive app on my mobile phone and take manual snapshot when required. The hardware is the same quality as all the other DVR units, has lots of features, support is prompt and the apps and software are easy to install and set-up. But its major downfall is no snapshot via email and even if it was available, the motion detection really needs some tuning. On my hardware its either on (flood inbox with emails) or off (no emails), no in-between no matter how much I tweak the settings.
